Origins and Inspiration

Badeta emerged in 2018, founded by two friends named Thomas and Joost. Their shared passion for surfing influenced the brand's relaxed yet adventurous identity. The spirit of surf culture shaped everything from interior design to the philosophy behind sourcing and roasting. Badeta began with online sales, then opened a roastery-café in the De Pijp district and later expanded to another location in Watergraafsmeer, establishing a firm presence on Amsterdam’s coffee scene.

A Unique Roasting Philosophy

The roasting approach at Badeta is built around an omni-roast style that suits both espresso and filter brewing methods. Each batch is carefully adjusted to bring out the finest qualities in every bean, often taking one or two months of trial runs before a new variety enters the lineup. A Probat roaster ensures precise heat control, and fresh beans are roasted twice a week so customers receive consistently high-quality coffee.

Signature Blends and Single Origins

Badeta’s signature blend typically includes beans from Ethiopia, Brazil, and Colombia, balancing chocolatey, nutty, and bright fruity notes. About 50% of this mix is sourced from Pedra Preta in Brazil, produced by Eduardo Ferreira de Souza. Single-origin coffees, such as Ethiopie Shakisso or Tibebu Roba, highlight distinct terroir flavors and processing methods. The roaster also offers a decaf option from Peru, showcasing hints of marzipan and roasted sugar—an uncommon level of depth for a caffeine-free coffee.

Experimental Lots and Limited Batches

Innovation thrives in the form of limited releases like Panama Villa Donia, developed through a dynamic cherry fermentation lasting 72–96 hours. Anaerobic or thermal shock methods often appear in partnerships with Cordillera de Fuego in Costa Rica. Colombia Las Perlitas, featuring the rare Pink Bourbon variety, demonstrates Badeta’s commitment to sourcing microlots with cupping scores of 86+ points. These exclusive offerings keep coffee enthusiasts eager for each new release.

Eye-Catching Design and Packaging

Surf culture meets modern style in the décor of Badeta’s cafés, often incorporating elements like pink-tiled bars. The packaging features transparent origin information, including farm names and processing details, so customers can trace every bean's journey. A short phrase in Dutch, "Van boon tot bakkie" ("from bean to cup"), appears frequently, emphasizing a commitment to quality from start to finish.

Quality and Sustainability

Badeta pays more than the market price to farmers—an extra 99 euro per bag in certain cases—to support sustainable agriculture and fair working conditions. About three-quarters of the global coffee market is dominated by large buyers, but Badeta prioritizes partnerships with smaller farms that practice environmentally conscious cultivation. Frequent visits to producers help maintain direct relationships, ensuring traceability and respect for local communities.

A Dedicated Team

Thomas and Joost remain hands-on as roasters and baristas, setting the bar for quality. Other team members, such as Noussayr, gain experience by traveling to coffee origins in Brazil or Colombia. One colleague even worked briefly on a Colombian plantation to understand each step of production. This immersive mindset unites the staff around a shared mission: connecting farmers, roasters, and coffee lovers.

Community Engagement

Badeta fosters a lively coffee culture by hosting cupping sessions, workshops, and barista trainings. Local cafés and offices that carry Badeta’s beans receive education on proper preparation, helping raise overall standards in Amsterdam. Informative blog posts on topics like fermentation trends and brew techniques reach a broader audience, encouraging everyone to explore and appreciate specialty coffee.

Looking Ahead

Future plans involve continued expansion, while preserving the tight-knit ambiance and high standards that defined the brand from the start. Seasonal selections appear regularly, featuring rare varieties and innovative processing methods. Ongoing investments in agroforestry projects—like those at Pedra Preta—are expected to deepen Badeta’s commitment to sustainability. Whether supplying restaurants and offices or experimenting with fresh micro-lots, the roastery consistently seeks new ways to celebrate coffee’s diverse flavors and the people who produce them.
