De Pelikaan Guatemala Huehuetenango is a medium-roasted Arabica with a balanced profile. Expect a full body with fine, bright acidity, notes of chocolate, red cherry and citrus, and a slightly sweet finish with light wine-like nuances. The beans come from small and medium-sized growers in the highlands of Guatemala and are washed processed for a clean, clear flavour. Suitable for filter coffee and for a mild espresso, with grind size to taste. Fresh grinding is recommended; use about 7 to 8 grams per 150 to 200 millilitres of water at a brewing temperature of 92 to 96 degrees Celsius.

More About Guatemala

Origin and farm

  • This coffee comes from the Huehuetenango region in north-western Guatemala. The area sits high in the mountains, 1,600–2,000 m elevation on volcanic limestone soil.
  • The climate is humid, 1,200–1,400 mm rainfall per year, with an average annual temperature of about 22 °C.
  • The harvest runs from January to April. Cherries are hand-picked in three passes to collect only the ripe fruit.
  • Up to 10,000 bags of coffee beans are produced each harvest.
  • The beans are produced by many small and medium-sized farmers in the region, often Maya communities.

Roast profile

  • De Pelikaan Guatemala is medium-roasted, strength 2 out of 5, resulting in a warm-brown bean with a balanced flavour profile.
  • With this light-to-medium roast, aromas such as chocolate and fruit are well preserved, accompanied by mild bitterness and subtle sweetness.
  • The medium roast profile makes the coffee versatile, suitable for both filter brewing and a slightly more intense espresso.
  • According to the site, the coffee has a full body ("full character") with pleasant wine-like notes that suit this roast level.
  • The colour of the roasted beans ranges from golden brown to light chestnut.

Flavor and aroma

  • According to De Pelikaan, the coffee offers "fine, intense acidity" with a full character and "pleasant wine notes". This points to a bright acidic profile with fruity accents.
  • Huehuetenango coffees are often known for flavours of red cherries, citrus fruits and chocolate.
  • Typical cupping notes include cherry, lemon, cinnamon and cocoa, or almond, milk chocolate and orange.
  • The coffee generally releases an aromatic fragrance with floral and vanilla tones, adding to its complexity.
  • The combination of bright acidity and a sweet aftertaste delivers a pleasant, well-balanced finish.

Processing Method

  • The coffee beans are processed using the washed method. The harvested cherries undergo wet fermentation for 24–48 hours.
  • After fermentation, the pulp is rinsed away and the beans are sun-dried.
  • This method produces a clean, clear cup with pronounced fruit tones.
  • Drying takes place in the open air, with machines sometimes used to complete the process.
  • The dried beans are then mechanically screened and sorted to remove any defective beans.

Variety and species

  • These are 100% Arabica coffee beans from the Coffea arabica plant.
  • De Pelikaan-Guatemala is composed of the Bourbon, Caturra, and Catuai varieties.
  • These high-altitude Arabicas are valued for their refined flavour and mildness.
  • Other varieties such as Pache are also grown in Huehuetenango and are sometimes blended.
  • The combination of these varieties yields a complex profile with both fruity and chocolate-like notes.

Sustainability and ethics

  • The product page of De Pelikaan lists no specific certifications or labels.
  • Much of the region’s coffee is grown through co-operatives with a focus on sustainability, for example ASPROCDEGUA (664 members, mostly women) which promotes organic and Fairtrade cultivation.
  • Some importers emphasise that Huehuetenango coffees are certified organic and Fairtrade.
  • Although De Pelikaan itself does not list any sustainability labels, the beans generally come from reliable, direct purchasing channels.
  • Collaboration with local growers contributes to fair trading relationships, even when this is not explicitly stated on the packaging.

Brewing Recommendations

  • Guatemala Huehuetenango is available as whole beans or ground coffee (with various grind-size options).
  • On the website you can choose a grind suitable for Turkish coffee, cafetière, espresso (manual or automatic), drip filter, AeroPress, regular filter or Chemex.
  • Thanks to its medium roast, this coffee works well for both filter brewing and for a light espresso or café crème.
  • For optimal flavour, fresh grinding is recommended. Use roughly 7–8 grams of coffee per 150–200 ml of water at a brewing temperature of 92–96 °C.
  • A brief pre-infusion can help accentuate the bright acids and aromas.

Awards or reviews

  • No international awards or mentions are known for this specific product.
  • No customer reviews have yet been posted on the website itself.
  • The coffee has received a strength rating of 2/5, indicating a mild profile.
  • Guatemala does host prestigious coffee competitions (e.g., Cup of Excellence), but this lot has not been named a prize winner there.
  • There is therefore (as yet) no public score or medal for this Guatemala, only positive feedback from loyal customers.

Packaging design

  • This coffee comes in a gold-coloured, matte package featuring the classic Pelikaan logo and slogan.
  • The front carries the product label with name and illustrations, while the back provides information on origin, roast and contents.
  • The design has a retro-style character that suits the heritage brand. Texts and logo appear in contrasting colours, making it stand out.
  • The bag is resealable (reusable strip) so the beans stay fresh after opening.
  • All in all, the packaging highlights tradition and quality, in line with De Pelikaan’s 200-plus-year history.
