More About Mocca d'Or

Introduction

Coffee gains extra luster when flavor, story and craftsmanship come together. Mocca d’Or has demonstrated that since the 1930s and today ranks among the top three Dutch hospitality suppliers. This article outlines in clear terms how the brand grew into a fixture and why it remains interesting for entrepreneurs and enthusiasts.

Nearly a century of craftsmanship

In 1930 Mr. Van Asseldonk started a small roastery in Breda, after which Mr. Durk Algra did the same in Zwolle in 1933. The two family businesses merged after more than seventy years into Algra Mocca d’Or and shortly thereafter into the current Mocca d’Or. Today the company operates from Zwolle with locations in Breda, Heiloo and Amsterdam and supplies coffee to hospitality businesses and specialty shops throughout the Netherlands.
Since 2010 entrepreneur Wouter Jansen van Velsen has led the company. His goal is clear: to strengthen Mocca d’Or ahead of its centenary in 2030. In 2025 growth accelerated thanks to a strategic investment from Berk Partners Groeifonds II, making expansion into foreign markets possible.

SlowRoast makes the difference

At the heart of Mocca d’Or is SlowRoast®, a slow drum roast at lower temperatures. This method gives oils time to caramelize evenly, avoiding bitter notes and allowing aromas to fully blossom. Smaller batches are packaged immediately after roasting so the customer receives coffee at the peak of freshness.
This focus on flavor over speed requires more time and attention, but delivers a consistent, full-bodied cup. The approach proves that craftsmanship and scalability can go hand in hand when quality remains the priority.

Blends that continue to delight

Mocca d’Or offers a wide range of blends and single origins from more than fifty countries. The three most popular blends are listed below:
- Espresso Aureo: rounded, aromatic and balanced, suitable for any time of day.
- Espresso Moccarabica: double roasted, with notes of walnut, ginger and caramel.
- Sicilia: a bold arabica-robusta blend with peanut and earthy nuances for lovers of a full-bodied espresso.
Under the EARTH Coffee label, enthusiasts can also find organic blends such as Melange Espresso (Peru, Guatemala, Mexico) and Melange Crema (Colombia, Ethiopia) that combine sustainability with rich flavors.

Innovative specialty micro-lots

The Fazenda Specialty Coffee program shows how Mocca d’Or experiments with microlots that score 80+ on the SCA cupping scale. The range changes regularly, with Fazenda Brazilië (hazelnut aroma, milk chocolate and red berries) as a steady star and seasonal highlights such as Fazenda Colombia (caramel, orange, mirabelle). All coffee comes in elegant 500 g bags with a matching serving line for gastronomy.

Sustainable and thoughtful packaging

Strong coffee deserves strong packaging. Mocca d’Or introduced a Quattro-seal bag in 2019 without aluminium or PVDC, good for the environment and for freshness. After the acquisition by Santas Koffie the brand goes even further: reusable tins and wooden crates are estimated to save 159,247 disposable packages annually.
- Quattro-seal bag: sleek design, fully recyclable.
- Reusable packaging: nostalgic look, zero waste.
- 500 g bags for Fazenda: premium appearance and portion control.

Partnership with farmers

Mocca d’Or believes in Direct Source. Direct procurement provides transparency, higher prices for farmers, and full traceability from plantation to cup. A large part of the range carries Fairtrade or organic certifications, which encourages sustainable cultivation.
- Direct Source: shorter chain, better income for producers.
- EARTH Coffee: 100% net profit goes to water projects in Africa and Asia.
- Mocca d’Or Foundation: invests in education and healthcare on coffee plantations.

Looking ahead to 2030

In the coming years Mocca d’Or will focus on export and further portfolio expansion. Acquisitions such as YesPlease capsules demonstrate the willingness to serve different segments, from beans to capsules. Growth will remain linked to corporate social responsibility through green technology, heat-recycling systems and solar panels in the roastery.
With the centenary in sight the sector expects special limited editions and events around the brand's rich history. That milestone promises not only a celebration, but also an opportunity to put the Dutch coffee experience on the world map.

Closing thought

Mocca d’Or proves that almost a century of tradition goes hand in hand with innovation, sustainability and growth. SlowRoast, strong partnerships and smart packaging form the basis for a future in which flavour and responsible business continue to reinforce each other. That makes the brand an interesting partner for the hospitality sector, retailers and anyone who takes coffee seriously.
