More About Dessert / Mild
Origin and farm
Dessert/Mild is an Arabica blend sourced from several world regions. Geels does not publish the exact origin or farm for each bean. For illustration: Geels Costa Rica blend comes from Hacienda Santa Anita, at 1 200 metres in Naranjo, Costa Rica. At these farms the ripe cherries are picked by hand and then fully washed. The high altitude and careful hand-picking typically yield clean, pure coffees.
Roast profile
The name “Mild” suggests a light to medium roast. This coffee offers a smooth, creamy body with very little bitterness. Geels rates the blend at intensity 2 (mild). In practice, that means the beans are not roasted dark brown, so their natural aromas are preserved. The result is a balanced flavour with a subtle, creamy finish.
Flavor and aroma
Dessert/Mild is known for its aromatic, creamy profile. It carries a full aroma and a gentle body. Comparable dessert blends are described as “rich, aromatic yet mild.” Sweet, nutty notes are usually detected in the aftertaste. Because the roast is light, sweet nuances – caramel, chocolate – come forward with virtually no sharp bitterness. All in all, the coffee is balanced and smooth, without a prickly aftertaste.
Processing Method
After picking, the coffee cherries undergo a controlled fermentation process. For example, in Geels’ Costa Rica-blend the cherries ferment for 16 hours before the beans are washed. This Dessert/Mild blend consists of washed Arabicas: the beans are fully washed to remove impurities, then dried in the traditional way. Processing complies with Rainforest Alliance standards, including rigorous guidelines for water use and the environment.
Variety / Species
Dessert/Mild is 100% Arabica coffee. The blend may contain several Arabica varieties (for example Bourbon, Typica or Caturra) depending on the harvest. In any case, this Geels blend includes no Robusta. By comparison, some dessert blends from other brands do use a small share of Robusta. Because only Arabica beans are used, the taste remains softer and less bitter.
Sustainability and ethics
Geels & Co. stresses sustainable coffee sourcing: only suppliers with Rainforest Alliance or 4C certification meet the requirements. Since 2016, all of Geels’ coffee purchases have been Rainforest Alliance-certified beans. That means producers comply with environmental and social standards (such as reduced water consumption, soil protection and decent working conditions). Transport is CO₂-neutral via certified logistics. Modern roasting techniques are also employed, saving both energy and water (e.g. 95% less water use).
Brewing Recommendations
- Espresso: Use this blend mainly for espresso, preferably in a semi-automatic machine (the crema is nicely balanced).
- Lungo: A long espresso (lungo) also works well; the soft flavour is preserved without overpowering bitterness.
- Filter coffee / French press: The beans can be coarsely ground for filter coffee or French press. Geels already offers this blend pre-ground for drip filters and French press.
- Moka pot: A mild cup can also be brewed in a moka pot (ideally with a slightly finer grind).
- General: Brew with water around 90–95°C. For a 30 ml espresso shot use about 7–8 g of coffee; for a 60 ml lungo use roughly 14 g.

Packaging design
Geels supplies Dessert/Mild in recycled valve bags. The packaging is made of sturdy recyclable plastic and fitted with a one-way valve, allowing CO₂ to escape while oxygen and light stay out, so the beans' aroma is preserved longer. The design prominently displays the Geels&Co logo and product name ("Dessert/Mild") in bright colours. Further product details and brewing advice appear on the back, but the valve and sustainable bag materials take centre stage.
