Strawberry Haze from Zwarte Roes is a limited edition filter coffee from Acevedo, Huila, Colombia. Producer Brayan Alvear fermented the beans anaerobically for five days with dried strawberries, then dried and stabilized them. The result is a very fruity profile with notes of fresh strawberry, hints of milk chocolate and a delicate rose aroma. The light roast highlights the bright, apple-like acidity and a silky body with a long finish. An SCA score of 89 underlines the quality. Brewing recommendations for V60, Chemex and Aeropress. 100 percent Arabica, single origin and direct trade, roasted fresh weekly in recyclable packaging.

More About Strawberry Haze

Strawberry Haze (Zwarte Roes): unique filter coffee

Strawberry Haze is a specialty from Zwarte Roes, from Colombia's Huila region. This limited-edition filter coffee has a pronounced fruity character thanks to a strawberry fermentation. The coffee has intense aromas and a full body with notes of strawberry and milk chocolate.

Origin and farm

This coffee comes from Acevedo in Huila, Colombia. The producer is Brayan Alvear, who grew up on the family farm in San Adolfo, Huila. Together with about 60 fellow producers from the region he supplies high-quality coffee beans. Zwarte Roes selected these beans as a 'limited edition' Colombian filter special. Brayan calls this blend his 'Juicy Strawberry' coffee because of the strawberry fermentation.

Roast profile

  • Filter coffee: lightly roasted (filter/light roast).
  • SCA score 89 (Specialty Coffee).
  • Zwarte Roes filter specials: 85–90 SCA points.
  • Roasting is intentionally kept light to accentuate the fruity flavors.

Flavor and aroma

  • Very fruity: dominant aroma and flavor of fresh strawberries.
  • Sweet and complex: explosive strawberry flavor with hints of milk chocolate.
  • Floral undertones: during the bloom a delicate rose fragrance emerges.
  • Bright acidity: fresh, apple-like acidity similar to Granny Smith.
  • Silky body: a creamy body with a long, refreshing finish.

Processing Method

  • 5 days of anaerobic fermentation with dried strawberries.
  • 10 days of mechanical drying of the beans.
  • Then 5 days of stabilization to equalize the moisture content.
  • Natural anaerobic processing (no additives).

Variety and species

  • Blend of Arabica varieties: Caturra, Castillo and Colombia.
  • 100% Arabica (no Robusta).
  • Single origin: all beans from Huila (Colombia).

Sustainability and ethics

  • Traceable and direct trade: farmers receive a fair price (more for better quality).
  • 100% natural beans, without added aromas or flavorings.
  • Freshly roasted weekly in small batches for optimal freshness.
  • Packaging: 100% recyclable material.

Brewing Recommendations

Recommended brewing methods are filter/pour-over (V60, Chemex, Aeropress). Some examples:

  • Chemex: 38.5 g coffee, 550 ml water (1:14), 93°C, 4–5 minutes.
  • Aeropress: about 18 g coffee, 200 ml water, 2 minutes (medium grind).
