More About Barista Cafe

A warm welcome in every city

Since 2009 Barista Cafe has become a familiar sight on Dutch shopping streets. The concept pairs artisan coffee with a living‑room atmosphere, so guests feel at home right away. This mix attracts both new visitors and loyal regulars every day.

From one location to 27 coffee houses

The first Barista Cafe opened in Alphen aan den Rijn, founded by Robin de Vries and Gwen Treskes. Their goal, “to serve the country’s best coffee”, resulted in a strict hard‑franchise model with tight quality control. Within fifteen years the network grew to 27 locations, from Groningen to Breda, with its headquarters in the coffee town of Joure.
Every location is run by local entrepreneurs. On average three to five full‑time staff work behind the bar, so service stays personal. Franchisees exchange knowledge through central training sessions, which keeps quality and hospitality consistent.

Roasting in small batches for maximum flavour

Fresh beans are the foundation. Barista Cafe has them roasted weekly in small batches and often chooses single‑origin coffees. The house bean comes from Campo Das Vertentes, Brazil, naturally processed and roasted to preserve a rich chocolate note.
Thanks to direct trade with farmers, the brand controls quality right from the plantation. Partnerships with specialized roasters, such as Single Estate Coffee Roasters, provide technical refinement and regular microlot experiments.

Selection: a fitting bean for every moment

The permanent selection consists of a recognizable core and seasonal specials. The main points:

  • Brazilian single origin with a pronounced chocolate nuance
  • Espresso blend in 1 kg bags for € 27.95, identical to what's used in the café machine
  • Nespresso‑compatible capsules, also available in value‑priced bulk boxes of 400
  • Rotating origins from, among others, Ethiopia, Colombia and Rwanda
Thanks to central sourcing and roasting, a cappuccino in Groningen tastes the same as an americano in Leiden. That predictability strengthens brand recognition and customer trust.

Taste, learn, join in

Innovation remains a spearhead. Under the “Barista’s Choice” label, limited‑edition drinks appear, like a Cinnamon Roll Iced Latte or Stroopwafel Macchiato. Feedback from cafés, public workshops and free tastings at openings decides whether flavors earn a permanent spot on the menu.
The mobile coffee bar goes to events, offices and weddings. This way Barista Café also reaches guests beyond its own walls and spreads its coffee culture across the Netherlands.

Quality and responsibility go hand in hand

Every step, from bean to cup, undergoes a quality check. Certified baristas bring out the best in the beans through precise extraction and latte art. Fresh milk, homemade cakes and a complimentary cookie with the coffee underline the focus on detail.
Sustainability receives equal attention. Since July 2023 a disposable cup costs €0.15, encouraging the use of a reusable, leak‑proof 320 ml cup to reduce waste. Direct‑trade relationships also guarantee fair prices for farmers and transparency for the consumer.

Ambitious plans for the future

The 2021 merger with Doppio Espresso and Chocolate Company created the parent company Caféco, now operating 67 locations. Caféco aims to double the number of outlets in the long term, both nationally and internationally. Barista Café benefits from shared purchasing power and broader product development, such as patisserie collaborations with MultiVlaai.
Local entrepreneurs see opportunities: new franchisees are planning multiple cafés in their region. Growing brand awareness, economies of scale and a clear quality philosophy give the brand a strong position in the competitive coffee market.

Closing thought

Barista Café shows how passion, craftsmanship and a warm atmosphere can combine to build a thriving franchise. With weekly fresh roasting, direct farmer partnerships and constant product innovation, the brand remains relevant. The coming years promise more locations, more flavours and above all more moments to share a great coffee.
