More About Anders Koffie
A New Perspective on Coffee: The Start in Zwolle
In January 2020, Tjerk Kooistra founded Anders Koffie in Zwolle. He developed the concept in October 2019, and two months later, the first shipment of beans arrived. Kooistra wanted to create a product with a positive impact on both people and the environment. Having previously worked in marketing for another coffee company, he discovered exactly what he wanted to do ’differently’.
The brand distinguishes itself from the mainstream market by operating fully organically and circularly. Launching during the pandemic actually worked in their favor; according to BioJournaal, more remote workers were seeking better coffee for their homes in October 2023. Since then, their visibility has grown significantly. In 2025, Kooistra spoke on the podcast ‘Koffie met een Groene Missie’ by 1Zwolle. Additionally, the brand showcased its work at the Groenstof Festival and was named a Climate Supporter by the Climate Mayor of Zwolle in April 2025.
Efficient Roasting and Short Supply Chains
Anders Koffie critiques the traditional coffee supply chain, where there are often six to eight intermediaries between the farmer and the consumer. The Zwolle-based brand opts for a more direct and sustainable approach. The beans are roasted in a specialized Loring coffee roaster, a machine that emits approximately eighty percent less CO2 than conventional models. The organic certification is officially registered under SKAL 109390 for agriculture both within and outside the EU.
Three Signature Flavor Profiles
Rather than rotating varieties weekly, the company works with a small and stable assortment of three coffees:
De Grondlegger: A 100% Arabica blend. This medium roast is characterized by a slight bitterness. The beans are sourced from green cooperatives in Peru, Colombia, Mexico, and Honduras.
De Opvolger: This dark roast consists of 100% Arabica. It is a full-bodied and powerful coffee with fruity notes. The beans come from Peru and the Sidamo region in Ethiopia.
“De Doorzetter”: The boldest option. This dark roast blend consists of eighty percent Arabica from East Timor and twenty percent Robusta from Uganda. The brand utilizes a direct-trade model for these beans.
Circular Packaging and Reuse
Sustainability is deeply embedded in their operations. The coffee bags are made from one hundred percent sugarcane waste. Anders Koffie takes back the empty packaging from the customer, repurposing these bags into items such as shopping bags, wine coolers, lunch bags, and cooler bags. In September 2024, WaardeRing announced a partnership with REMONDIS; together with contact person Jannette de Lange, they process the old bags into granulate for new products.
Used coffee grounds are also given a second life, serving as an ingredient for handmade natural soaps. Additionally, Anders Koffie collaborates with Yigit Ispir from Zwolsche Zwammen, having developed a circular growing kit to cultivate edible mushrooms on coffee grounds. Furthermore, the company reuses cardboard boxes within its logistics process.
Local Delivery and Business Growth
Deliveries are largely emission-free. In Zwolle, the team delivers using the “Bak Koffiets”. In the surrounding region, an electric car is used, while national distribution is handled by bike couriers from Cycloon. Customers can sign up for a subscription for monthly or bi-monthly deliveries. For businesses, delivery in and around Zwolle is free; outside that region, delivery costs are waived for orders of four kilograms or more.
During the first two years, the founder delivered all orders personally by bike. By October 2023, the company had three delivery employees. Kooistra now focuses on agreements and route planning. A remaining logistical challenge is the collection of coffee grounds, which must occur within two days to prevent mold growth.
The customer base continues to grow. Initially, eighty percent of customers were private individuals, but the share of business clients has since increased significantly. The goal for 2023 was to grow from 550 to 800 customers, with the ambition to capture ten percent of the market in Zwolle. Following that, Anders Koffie is considering a franchise model for other cities.
