More About Betuws Bakkie
The Rise of a Local Coffee Roastery
The idea for Betuws Bakkie emerged in the summer of 2020. Founder Arnout de la Rambelje started in a shed in the Betuwe countryside with a small, English coffee roaster. His motivation was dissatisfaction with the opaque coffee chain, where farmers often received prices that were too low. The company now positions itself as a local supplier with a positive impact, from farm to cup.
De la Rambelje brought significant experience from the coffee sector. He previously worked in a commercial role at a large roastery and for a manufacturer of coffee machines. Today, alongside his own company, he is also active as a coffee roaster and quality controller at BOOT Koffie, where he systematically evaluates coffees using a digital scoring system.
The Philosophy: The Four B’s
The brand’s motto is “coffee with character”. The core values are honest, transparent, and artisanal. This positioning is summarized in the four B’s: Boer, Bodem, Branding, and Betrokken. The application of this is very concrete in daily practice:
Boer: The coffee farmer always receives a fair and good price for the harvest.
Bodem: The coffee beans are grown in a responsible manner.
Branding: The roasting process is fresh, small-scale, and entirely artisanal.
Community Involvement: Five percent of the profits are donated to social causes within the region, such as Welzijn West Betuwe.
Artisanal Roasting and Flavor Profiles
Betuws Bakkie consciously chooses a small-scale approach over industrial mass production. The assortment offers a tailored roast profile for every brewing method, and the brand shares these profiles transparently with the consumer. The permanent collection consists of specific blends and single origins:
Kleibonk: A dark, powerful Italian-style blend. Crafted from Brazilian Arabica and Indonesian Robusta.
Lingestroom: A medium-roasted, smooth coffee with a slightly bitter taste and a crisp finish. Contains Arabica from Brazil and Ethiopia.
Brazilië – De Steenbok: A classic, nutty single origin with a mild flavor, roasted to a medium profile.
Ethiopië – Bloesemtijd: A light-roasted, delicate filter coffee with floral aromas, soft fruit, and sweet caramel.
Decaf – Cafeïnevrij: A decaffeinated option from Mexico. This bean is slightly spicy and suitable for both filter coffee and espresso.
Transparent Sourcing
The origin of the beans is essential to the mission. Betuws Bakkie works directly with specific cooperatives and estates. The Brazilian beans for Kleibonk and De Steenbok are sourced through the Capricornio cooperative, an organization focused on ecological and social improvements for local farmers. The Robusta used in Kleibonk comes from the Indonesian island of Flores.
The organically grown Bloesemtijd originates from the Limmu Kossa estate in the Jimma region of Ethiopia. The decaf beans are grown by a group of sixteen farmers in Chiapas, Mexico. These beans grow at high altitudes and are decaffeinated locally using a natural mountain water process, free from harsh chemicals.
Assortment and B2B Market
Consumers can purchase the coffee in 200, 400, or 1000 gram packaging. There is a wide selection of whole beans or various grinds, such as for French press or drip filter. Additionally, the brand offers Nespresso-compatible capsules. The company also provides handy accessories and unique gift sets, such as coffee presented in miniature fruit crates.
In the business market, Betuws Bakkie focuses strongly on its own region. The company supplies offices, events, and the hospitality sector. Local partners such as De Pluk in Geldermalsen and Het Smakenatelier in Buren serve the coffee on a structural basis. Furthermore, in Culemborg, the brand is available for consumers at the store PUUR.
Education and Circularity
Betuws Bakkie actively shares knowledge via its own blog called ‘Koffiepraat’. Articles cover practical topics, such as the optimal way to store beans. Readers learn that light, heat, air, and moisture are the greatest enemies of fresh coffee. Other publications discuss correct brewing ratios or the effects of the beverage on digestion.
Finally, the brand demonstrates true innovation with circular products. A striking example is the oyster mushroom growing kit. This allows customers to grow mushrooms on their own coffee grounds in a recycled bucket. This initiative directly connects daily coffee consumption with waste reduction and local sustainability.
