More About Coffeecompany
Introduction
Coffee enthusiasts often talk about trendy chains from the US, but since 1996, Coffeecompany has shown that a distinctive Dutch brand can be just as appealing. With an open roastery, 38 locations, and a focus on sweet, light-roasted beans, the chain has become a staple in the Randstad and beyond.
From pioneer to national player
Dick de Kock and Rick Bekkema opened their first bar on the Leidsestraat in Amsterdam. At the time, foreign espresso culture was still a novelty in the Netherlands. The fresh look and welcoming atmosphere were an immediate hit, leading the brand to quickly open cafés in Utrecht, Rotterdam, and Den Haag.
In 2011, Douwe Egberts acquired the fast-growing company, which helped facilitate the opening of more locations. Since July 1, 2021, Coffeecompany has been owned by the hospitality group Albron, yet the concept has remained recognizable and independent.
Roastery in Amsterdam-Oost
Since 2013, Coffeecompany has roasted its own beans. The roasters aim for maximum sweetness, avoiding dark, bitter notes. Every batch is kept small to maintain precise control.
Visitors can peek into the roastery seven days a week. Tasting is also encouraged, as there is a dedicated tasting room where new roasts are shared immediately.
Blends and single origins
The permanent assortment consists of trusted espresso blends like the “Oude School,” paired with rotating single origins. Every season brings new origins, including beans from Ethiopia, Kenya, and Honduras.
A prime example is the Colombian micro-lot “Finca Filadelfia”. Since 2015, Coffeecompany has purchased more than half of the twenty bags produced annually. The result is a full body with notes of milk chocolate, soft stone fruit, and a vibrant acidity.
Experiments and limited releases
The roastery serves as a tasting lab where new roast profiles, filter coffees, and even cold “cc coolers” are developed. As soon as one micro-lot runs out, the next origin takes its place.
Small batches appear regularly—such as a natural Ethiopian with pronounced fruity notes. Those who act fast can snag a bag via the webshop or at their nearest café.
Team and craftsmanship
Roastmasters Nathan and Tom develop each recipe. Baristas undergo intensive training at the company's own “koffiepakhuis” and compete annually in the CC Barista Cup.
Their dedication pays off: Coffeecompany baristas frequently reach the finals of Dutch espresso or latte art championships. This professional talent attracts more guests and raises the bar for the entire industry.
Direct ties with farmers
Coffee isn't bought on the anonymous market. Instead, Coffeecompany opts for direct trade and fair prices that reflect the quality. Farmers like Oscar and Yaqueline Hoyos of Finca Filadelfia receive both security and recognition this way.
Many partners work organically or sustainably. This results in better beans and appeals to an audience that values origin and the environment.
Community and social initiatives
Every location acts as a community stage. Local artists exhibit their work on the walls, while cozy music nights draw in customers. This creates a living-room feel that large chains often lack.
Since 2008, the “Donkere Dagen” campaign has run every December. For every winter coffee sold, Coffeecompany donates a bag of beans to De Regenboog Groep. In 2022, this amounted to 576 kg—enough for roughly 70,000 cups of comfort.
Looking Ahead
Albron aims to open eighteen more locations by 2025, including spots in shopping centers and holiday parks. The goal is to become the number one specialty coffee chain in the Netherlands.
Furthermore, more single-origin releases, nitro cold brew, and sustainable packaging are on the roadmap. Smaller kiosks in offices or hospitals are also on the horizon, ensuring coffee lovers can find quality brews everywhere.
