More About De Koffiejongens

De Koffiejongens: Development and Business Model

De Koffiejongens was founded in 2016 by Corné van Drogenbroek and Walter Morriën. According to the company, commercial operations began in 2017. The business is based at Brediusweg 25 in Bussum. This location is listed as an office rather than a public coffee bar.

The original business model centered on coffee capsule subscriptions. Customers received automatic refills to ensure their supply never ran out. Later, the focus shifted to plant-based capsules for machines using the Nespresso format. CEO Bart Dingjan stated that compostable capsules became a key growth driver around 2020.

Assortment and Coffee Profiles

The product range includes both capsules and whole coffee beans. The capsule line features Lungo, Lungo Forte, Lungo Extra Forte, Espresso, Ristretto, and Decaf. The stated intensity levels range from 4/12 for Lungo to 11/12 for Ristretto.

The beans are available as Medium Roast, Dark Roast, and Decaf. They are sold in 375-gram and one-kilogram bags. Espresso Forte is a limited-edition single-origin coffee from the Mount Elgon region in Uganda. According to the product classification, this coffee has an intensity of 10/12.

Most products consist entirely of arabica. Lungo Extra Forte and Dark Roast also contain a portion of robusta. The company states that all purchased coffees score a minimum of 82 points. Details regarding the roasting machine, software, capacity, and lead roaster are not publicly documented.

Origin and Processing

The published origin information lists coffee from Brazil, Colombia, India, Uganda, and Peru. The named suppliers are the Dutra family in Brazil, Dagoberto in Colombia, and the Benny family in India. In Uganda, the company states that it works with Agnes and Jenipher.

In Peru, the women's collective Huella de Mujer from Valle Alto is named as a trading partner. The Ugandan coffee grows at altitudes between 1,400 and 2,200 meters. The coffee cherries are hand-picked there, fermented for 24 to 36 hours, and dried on raised structures.

The company reports paying a price of €4.43 per kilogram of green Ugandan coffee. This amount is said to be 26 percent above the stated Fairtrade minimum price. This data was provided by the company and has not been independently verified within the available research.

Sustainability and Production

De Koffiejongens has been certified as a B Corporation since May 2023. The company also states that the coffee is organic and SKAL-certified. According to this explanation, no synthetic pesticides or artificial fertilizers are used.

According to the company, the capsules are made from PHA and cellulose. The website features a certification mark from TÜV Austria and mentions a composting period of up to 26 weeks. The company also states that coffee beans are roasted using biomass and cooled with air.

The contracted roastery is described as a circular building powered by solar panels and heat pumps. The company also highlights agroforestry, traceable farms, and checks for deforestation. The long-term goal is to achieve zero-emission coffee production by 2030.

Sales and Presence

Products are available through the company’s own online store as subscriptions or individual purchases. Additionally, the company supplies offices, hotels, bed-and-breakfast locations, and holiday parks. Since October 2025, capsules and beans have been available in approximately 800 Albert Heijn stores, excluding AH to go.

A sponsored article from July 2026 cites more than 900 Albert Heijn stores and over 5,000 hotels and offices. Since these figures come from paid corporate materials, they are considered self-reported distribution data. The company is active in the Netherlands and Belgium and is expanding its operations in Germany and Austria.

Organization and Social Projects

Bart Dingjan has served as CEO since September 2023. Klaas Veering took on the role of CFO in 2024. Jerom Nieuwenhuizen focuses on sustainability and operations. The founders continue to be credited as such by the company.

Through the Board of Commissioners, the company engaged with approximately 850 children aged eight to twelve. They discussed topics such as organic coffee, microfinance, and research into coffee cultivation in the Netherlands. This research is conducted in collaboration with HAS Green Academy and InnoGrowers.

De Koffiejongens was featured in the 2024 Challenger50 selection and on that year’s FD Gazellen list. The company was also a finalist for the NIMA Marketing Company of the Year 2024. There is no documented evidence of a permanent café location, public tastings, or a visitable roastery.
