More About De Laat Coffee

A Family Coffee Business in Nieuwkuijk
De Laat Coffee was established in the mid-2010s, around 2016. The ambition was to build a completely new coffee roastery from the ground up, with sustainability and quality at the core from day one. The family business is based in Nieuwkuijk, Noord-Brabant. For the first two years, the coffee was roasted using rented equipment. Today, the roastery operates from its own circularly constructed building. The company explicitly positions itself as a green, artisanal player rather than an industrial mass producer.
Experience and Leadership
The daily management and the face of the company lie with the de Laat family. Tom de Laat approached his father, Rob, with the idea of starting their own roastery. Rob de Laat brings over forty years of experience in the coffee world, having previously worked at Douwe Egberts and as a co-owner of Smit & Dorlas. Later, brother Harrie joined the initiative, making the venture a tight-knit family project. There are no complex external management layers or a separately appointed head roaster.
Unique Roasting Philosophy and Technique
The roastery employs a distinctive production method to guarantee optimal flavor. The beans are first roasted as single origins, and only then are the blends assembled. This ensures that the unique character of each bean is preserved in the final cup of coffee. De Laat Coffee utilizes a so-called ‘slow-roast’ technique. This process takes sixteen to twenty-three minutes, which is significantly longer than the ten to fourteen minutes typically used by industrial roasters. After roasting, the company cools the beans with air instead of water. The coffee then rests for three weeks before being packaged with a special aroma valve.
Fully Climate-Neutral Production

De Laat Coffee states that the roastery operates 100% CO2-neutral. This result is achieved through a series of eco-friendly measures. The roasters run entirely on biomass instead of natural gas. Furthermore, air-cooling the beans directly saves on gas and water. The roof of the roastery is covered in solar panels, which cover the company’s entire electricity needs. Excess energy flows back into the power grid as green electricity. Finally, advanced heat pumps regulate the temperature within the building.

Strict Selection and Sourcing
Quality control is a primary focus. The company imports the coffee themselves and records extensive data, registering the origin, the altitude of the plantation, and the bean size. The beans are washed in the country of origin, followed by at least seven more selection steps at the roastery. De Laat Coffee only purchases beans of screen size 17 and 18. Moreover, they exclusively accept the highest quality category, meaning zero to eight defects per three hundred grams. The beans come from countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Honduras, Vietnam, and Indonesia. No specific partner farms are publicly mentioned.
Signature Blends and Single Origins
The assortment focuses primarily on espresso blends. Most blends consist of 100% Arabica, with a few exceptions where high-grade Robusta is used. The current offering includes the following bestsellers:

Espresso Italiano: A blend of seventy percent Arabica and thirty percent Robusta, featuring notes of chocolate, caramel, and fruit.
Espresso Originale: A smooth, hundred percent Arabica coffee with aromas of citrus, cane sugar, and florals.
Espresso Belluno: Hundred percent Arabica with a light acidity and flavors of caramel and nuts.
Espresso Firenze: A balanced Arabica with subtle hints of lemon and wood.
Espresso Forza: A bold blend with an equal ratio of fifty percent Arabica and fifty percent Robusta.
Single Origin Colombia Excelso: A single-origin coffee with tasting notes of candied fruit, dates, cocoa, and roasted nuts.

Additionally, the company offers an organic blend that is Fairtrade and SKAL certified. Their selection of single-origin filter coffee is less prominent.
Machines, Training, and Customer Service
De Laat Coffee serves both commercial clients and private consumers, with a primary focus on the premium hospitality sector. In addition to coffee beans, the company sells high-end equipment, tableware, and maintenance services. Since June 2023, the roastery has been the exclusive Benelux dealer for Tempesta espresso machines. From 2022 to 2025, this brand was the official sponsor of the World Barista Championship. Equipment from Rocket Espresso is also part of their portfolio. Customers are welcome in the showroom for demonstrations from Monday through Friday. Furthermore, the company provides free barista training for hospitality staff. For outdoor events, De Laat Coffee has three mobile Piaggio coffee carts to provide service directly on location.
