More About DutchBeans
The Growth of DutchBeans in the North of the Netherlands
Since its founding around 2011 by Peter van der Wal, DutchBeans has been building a strong reputation in the north. Van der Wal, coming from a hospitality family that ran De Stormvogel on Terschelling, has a deep understanding of the local market. The early mission was clear: to structurally elevate the coffee and tea experience in Friesland, Groningen, and Drenthe. What started in a small premises at Bij de Put in Leeuwarden, and later moved to Grote Hoogstraat, has since grown into a broad operation at Ceresweg on De Hemrik. Today, a tight-knit team of five serves the hospitality industry, businesses, and consumers, with a registered head office in Grou.
Philosophy: Freshness and Advanced Roasting Technology
The roastery’s core promise centers on absolute freshness. The operational motto is: “You order, we roast”. This means the company operates without unnecessary inventory and produces exclusively to order. For hospitality clients, this guarantees fresh beans every week. They apply strict rules to events as well; coffee is roasted no more than one week before a festival to ensure the flavors develop optimally.
The physical roasting process is state-of-the-art. DutchBeans utilizes a Loring Smart Roaster. This innovative machine provides an energy saving of approximately eighty percent. Additionally, heat recovery significantly reduces emissions. An experienced, yet anonymous blender ensures consistent quality in small batches. This expert is also a respected judge at national barista championships.
Direct Sourcing and Sustainable Choices
The sourcing strategy relies heavily on the direct-farmer principle. DutchBeans purchases green coffee beans directly from farmers with whom they maintain close relationships. This approach serves as a transparent alternative to large-scale Fairtrade blends. The beans for events specifically come from Brazil, Colombia, Tanzania, and Indonesia.
Sustainability is a common thread throughout the business model. With the innovative “Follow the Beans” concept, they introduce fully traceable coffee in 900-gram bags. Customers scan a QR code to view the entire chain, from the farm to the roast profile. Furthermore, the company standardly donates one dollar to the B1G1 initiative for every kilo of Craft Coffee sold.
Flavor Profiles and an Extensive Assortment
The assortment includes eight Craft Coffee products and five Premium variants, tailored to different preferences. Some notable flavor profiles from the collection include:
Subtiel 214: An accessible, bittersweet blend with notes of chocolate and nuts, suitable for any brewing method.
Temperamentvol: A classic, powerful Italian espresso with a long finish, crafted from South and Central American beans.
Intens 232: A dark, bold espresso with a touch of African beans, perfect for milk-based drinks.
Attent: A Premium variant characterized as a full-bodied coffee with a small addition of Asian robusta.
Alongside their focus on coffee, the company offers 24 varieties of tea under the DutchLeafs brand. Monthly subscriptions are available for consumers. This B2C market became a key pillar for the roastery, particularly between 2020 and 2021.
Full-service supplier for Hospitality and Offices
DutchBeans explicitly positions itself as a total solution provider. Their offering goes beyond supplying beans, ranging from equipment to training. Business clients receive tailored advice and can lease, buy, or rent machines without minimum purchase obligations. The portfolio includes dozens of machines from brands such as Gaggia Milano, Necta, Saeco, La Marzocco, and XLVI. Their range of grinders and accessories includes top brands like Mahlkönig, Fiorenzato, and Quality Espresso.
High-end equipment requires thorough knowledge. Therefore, DutchBeans provides on-site training and assists with personalized barista settings. For service and periodic maintenance in Friesland, Groningen, and Drenthe, KoffieMatters serves as the permanent technical partner.
Local Impact and Events
Their connection to the northern region is evident in their strong presence at festivals. Through their own event brand, KoffieLokaal, they provide the coffee at Oerol, Psy-Fi, Into The Great Wide Open, and Explore the North. Slogans such as “The Roast to Happiness” underscore their welcoming and accessible character. Local entrepreneurs greatly appreciate this approach; for example, De Jong’s IJs has been using these beans in artisanal coffee ice cream for over ten years. As a sponsor of the North Roast Latte Throwdown in 2024, DutchBeans proves to be a true driver of the regional coffee culture.
