More About Roasted for Flavor
From Nurse to Coffee Roaster
The foundation for coffee roastery Gebrand op Smaak was laid in 2018. The founders, Floris van Woesik and Linda Nieuwenhuizen, found valuable inspiration during a remarkable journey through Tanzania. Near the impressive Kilimanjaro, they visited a local coffee plantation. This defining moment sparked the desire to start their own business, with an immediate focus on high-quality coffee, tea, and chocolate. Floris had previously worked for years as a nurse in healthcare, but eventually decided to make the leap and immerse himself fully in the craft of coffee. Linda actively supports the business behind the scenes, using her exceptional palate to ensure quality. The roastery started in Beverwijk, but the location quickly proved too small. Since November 2023, the business has been located at Malerstraat 8E in Wormer. During the opening weekend on 24 November 2023, customers were able to admire the new physical roastery and shop.
Specialty Coffee and Direct Trade
The philosophy of Gebrand op Smaak centers on the entire chain, from the plant to the cup. Coffee beans are strictly selected based on outstanding flavor and full traceability. The company explicitly positions itself as a specialty coffee roastery, meaning the beans must achieve a minimum score of eighty points according to international standards. In its early stages, the roastery offered exclusively Single Origin and Single Estate coffees. Today, however, the assortment is broader and more versatile; the catalog now includes carefully curated blends and decaf options. Notable is their pragmatic view on formal certifications. Floris does not prioritize expensive, public certification labels; the roastery prefers to invest that money directly into the quality of the coffee. In doing so, they ensure better and fairer payment for the farmers and workers on the plantations.
The Artisanal Roasting Process
The roasting of the green beans is handled entirely in-house. Floris and Linda use their own professional installation in Wormer. The artisanal process truly begins once the roaster reaches a temperature of approximately 160 degrees Celsius. At that exact moment, the green beans enter the hot machine. This unroasted coffee arrives at the roastery in heavy, traditional seventy-kilo jute sacks. The roaster has intentionally remained non-computerized, which requires a great deal of human attention and precision. The roasting is described as a unique blend of craftsmanship, science, and a deep love for flavor. The coffees are generally roasted as espresso beans, though for true filter coffee enthusiasts, the roastery applies a separate and specific roasting method.
Flavor Profiles and Expanded Assortment
The brand’s flavor language is refined and complex. Dark and bitter tones make way for bright and fruity flavors. The website frequently mentions notes of florals, berries, citrus, chocolate, nuts, and soft caramel. The countries of origin vary widely, featuring options from Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, and Peru. Some well-known names from the current collection include:
Burundi Muyinga
India Monsooned Malabar Arabica
Coffee by Ferre
Brasil Yellow Bourbon
Mexico Finca el Flamingo
Peru La Prosperidad
Gebrand op Smaak is, however, more than just a coffee roastery. Their Instagram profile mentions an offering of about forty different types of tea, where customers can find black tea, green tea, rooibos, and various herbal blends. The webshop even offers special tea subscriptions and tasting packages. Additionally, the shop sells exclusive single-origin chocolate from countries such as Belize and Ecuador, with special attention given to the Standout Chocolate category. Customers can also combine these products into festive gift hampers or purchase gift cards.
Sustainability, Equipment and Service
Sustainability and environmental awareness are deeply woven into the business operations. The company serves both private customers and corporate clients. Business clients receive their orders in sturdy, reusable four-kilo tins. These tins are returned after use, professionally cleaned, and refilled. Furthermore, local deliveries are often handled directly by Floris and Linda themselves. For private customers, the webshop sells a special, sustainable coffee tin. To further reduce the ecological footprint, the roastery promotes green bicycle delivery. This eco-friendly service is available in Beverwijk, Castricum, Heemskerk, Uitgeest, Wormerveer, Wormer, and Assendelft.
The company also provides additional services and equipment to complete the coffee experience. For instance, they offer a ‘barista on location’ service for events and the hospitality sector. In-store and online, consumers can find high-quality coffee machines and matching accessories. The range includes fully automatic home machines, espresso machines, and coffee grinders. For this, they partner with renowned brands such as Nivona, Sage, VBM, Moccamaster, and Baratza. This positions the company to remain a strong and growing brand within the local coffee scene of the Zaanstreek in 2026.
