More About Hani Coffee Company Nederland

Introducing Yunnan Coffee to the Netherlands
Since July 2023, the Dutch coffee market has gained a unique specialist. Hani Coffee Company Nederland operates out of Appelscha in Friesland with two to ten employees. The company began public sales in October of that same year with one clear goal: to introduce specialty coffee from the Chinese region of Yunnan to the Dutch market. The founders noticed that Chinese coffee was still virtually unknown here.
Two Founders with a Shared Vision
The company is led by a duo with complementary expertise. Joep Hörst manages the Dutch operations and has a professional background in online marketing. Maarten Hol is the face of the coffee and has lived in China for ten years. Maarten is a certified Arabica Q Grader and achieved SCA Roasting levels one through three. He manages a coffee roastery and a green coffee export company on-site. The brand name is a tribute to the Hani, an ethnic group in South China who worked on the first partner plantation.
Direct Sourcing and Quality Control
Hani distinguishes itself through a strict focus on a single origin. The assortment consists exclusively of a washed Catimor bean. This one hundred percent Arabica coffee grows at an altitude of sixteen hundred meters in the Menglian region. The team has worked intensively with this plantation for nearly ten years to increase product quality. According to Joep Hörst, the company has control over the entire process, from bean to cup. They visit the farmers personally and maintain strict oversight of fair contracts and safe working conditions. During the processing of the coffee cherries, there is a strong emphasis on picking ripe cherries and extremely careful sorting.
Roasting Process with a Social Mission
The coffee is not roasted in Friesland, but at Koffiebranderij OVErHOOP in Woerden. This collaboration adds an important social dimension to the coffee brand. OVErHOOP structurally helps people who are distanced from the labor market return to work. The roastery uses a fully automatic machine to keep every batch highly consistent. Furthermore, Hani employs a system entirely focused on absolute freshness. There is no large inventory; instead, the beans are freshly roasted every Monday as standard. Customers typically receive their orders within one to three days. The specific roast profile features a ’first crack’ around 196 degrees Celsius, followed by the ’second crack’ between 224 and 228 degrees Celsius.
Flavor Profiles and Special Blends
The brand’s specialty status is supported by an impressive score of 83 points on the CQI system. The Dutch webshop offers three core products, all derived from the same Yunnan bean. After roasting, the fresh beans degas for exactly three days. The optimal flavor emerges around the fifth day and generally remains ideal up to twenty-one days.

Medium Roast: This roast offers light notes of citrus, cocoa, caramel, nuts, and brown sugar. This variant is fundamentally ideal for filter coffee brewing.
Dark Roast: A bold and creamy coffee with deep flavors of dark chocolate and nuts. This roast is highly suitable for filter, espresso machines, and the moka pot.
Espresso Blend: A unique mix of the medium and dark roast from the exact same bean. The profile reveals dark chocolate, nuts, and a pleasant, light acidity. This blend is sold exclusively as whole beans.

Sustainability and Environment at the Plantation
According to founder Maarten Hol, true sustainability consists of three absolutely indispensable pillars: environmental protection, a fair income for farmers, and financially viable business models. A clear, fair price guarantee and quality training provide farmers with significantly more income security. At the farm in Yunnan, all waste is carefully separated, and wastewater is purified before final discharge. The remaining husks of the picked coffee cherries are systematically composted for reuse. On one of their own plantations, they now use almost exclusively compost to restore the complex soil quality. These measures reduce the use of chemical fertilizers to an absolute minimum.
Distribution for Consumers and Businesses
Through its digital webshop, Hani primarily focuses on home users with 500g and 1kg bags. These bags feature a special valve, allowing carbon dioxide to escape while keeping harmful oxygen safely out. According to the company, the coffee performs better than regular supermarket coffee even after six months, although the flavor is optimal within the first month. The brand aims to return to 100&#82% Organic biodegradable packaging in the future. For the B2B market, there is a separate, dedicated portal for orders starting from six kilos per shipment. After formal approval, companies can pay via invoice for their office coffee. The brand also provides specific advice to these business clients regarding the right equipment. For fully automatic office machines from Jura or DeLonghi, they explicitly recommend the Espresso Blend or the powerful Dark Roast.
