More About Het Brandhuys
The Evolution of Het Brandhuys
David Joosen founded Het Brandhuys in 2019, starting from a converted garden house in Geertruidenberg. A unique coffee experience in Helsinki served as the direct inspiration for this venture. Joosen wanted to match that specific flavor profile and dove headfirst into the artisanal roasting process. The brand story describes a clear shift from a simple hobby to a professional passion. On July 1, 2023, the former physiotherapist decided to focus on coffee full-time. Today, the growing business operates from a space in the Dongecentrale in Geertruidenberg.
Roasting Philosophy and Quality Control
An optimal taste experience is the absolute core of this roaster’s daily business philosophy. Joosen learned the artisanal basics of the craft with the help of coffee roaster Jelle van Rossum. A targeted workshop by James Wise shifted his focus from technique to sensory evaluation. After every roast, the fresh coffee is carefully cupped to ensure quality. Het Brandhuys structurally uses a Tonino color meter to guarantee measurable and consistent quality. This results in less guesswork and more certainty in the finished product. Specific details regarding the roaster’s capacity have not been made public at this time.
Direct Trade and Transparency
The brand focuses heavily on specialty coffee and employs a direct-trade sourcing model. This procurement method offers better traceability and more targeted control over the final quality. It also often yields a significantly fairer price for the participating farmer. For a specific coffee from Rwanda, for example, over 40 percent of the price per kilo went directly to the farmer. Joosen consciously chooses not to apply for an organic Skal certificate for his coffees. This certification would cost 2,000 euros annually for a volume of 400 kilos of green coffee, resulting in an undesirable price increase of 6 euros per kilo for the consumer. Well-known partners for the import of these coffees include Primavera and Bette Buna.
The Assortment: Focus on Single Origin
The current and accessible online offering consciously contains no fixed or permanent house blend. Instead, the commercial focus lies entirely on various single-origin specialty coffees.
India Monsooned Malabar: The boldest coffee in the assortment, distinctly characterized by spicy and pungent notes.
Guatemala Yulchen: A staple since 2020 with a score of 85.5 and notes of chocolate and honey.
Peru Toterani: A washed coffee sourced via Q-grader Dula Julcarima, boasting a score of 84.5 and notes of pure chocolate.
Ethiopia Guji Decaf: A fruity decaf option, processed safely and flavorfully using the Sugarcane method.
For new or curious customers, a special tasting kit is available in two sizes. The roasted coffee typically reaches its peak flavor profile between one and six weeks after the roast date.
Education and Brewing Advice
Het Brandhuys also shares detailed recipes to provide home brewers with optimal guidance. For espresso, the theoretical starting point is a fixed 1:2 ratio with a brew time of 23 to 28 seconds. However, the roaster explicitly emphasizes that taste always takes precedence over a predetermined time. The official website features a handy flavor wheel to visually guide customers. This intuitive scale helps consumers transition from classic to more fruity profiles. Additionally, there are specific recipes for filter methods, with grinders like the Niche Zero serving as a well-known reference.
B2B Market and Workshops
Beyond the consumer market, the specialized roastery also serves regional hospitality venues and offices. Business clients receive their fresh coffee beans weekly in special, reusable, and sustainable tins. The comprehensive service package also includes practical advice on espresso machines and targeted staff training. Furthermore, the ambitious company offers three standard workshops: Coffee Tasting, Barista, and Latte Art. An interactive workshop typically lasts two hours and takes place at the roastery or on location. The educational tasting session standardly includes a professional cupping with six carefully selected and diverse coffees.
Brand Identity and Local Roots
The physical packaging perfectly reflects the authentic and artisanal character of the brand. Every bag sold is manually and carefully branded with a stamped logo and real sealing wax. Online, Joosen shares his vision and background through the ten-part informative video series “Brandende Vragen”. The company can be visited by appointment at Centraleweg 14 in Geertruidenberg. Selected coffees are also available on the shelves at Troost en Leut and Tante Pop. An impressive Google customer rating of 4.9 out of 5.0 underscores the exceptionally strong local appreciation.
