More About Ketelbinkie Koffie
The Roots of a Rotterdam Coffee Brand
Ketelbinkie Koffie is a well-known player in the Dutch coffee sector. Steven Tacq founded the brand in 2013. According to a recent interview from December 2025, Tacq already has over twenty-two years of experience in the coffee industry. The brand profiles itself with an unmistakable Rotterdam character. Their slogan states it directly: “Koffie met werelds Rotterdams eigentijds karakter”. After a period of nomadic entrepreneurship, the roastery moved to a permanent location in mid-2024: the old Sunrise lemonade factory on the Weegbreestraat, right next to the airport.
Philosophy and Direct Trade Sourcing
The roastery follows a conscious and focused sourcing philosophy. Ketelbinkie does not work with a constantly rotating selection, but instead focuses on absolute top quality. Every Tuesday, the team roasts the beans in small batches on a classic Probat machine. The sourcing process takes place exclusively through direct trade. The roastery maintains personal contact with coffee farmers worldwide. In consultation with these producers, they determine the processing methods and the exact bean sizes. This guarantees a high and consistent quality for every cup of coffee.
Three Signature Blends
The assortment rests on two pillars: an original and a special blend. The “Ketelbinkie koffie origineel” is a mix of beans from Brazil, Colombia, and India. This coffee offers a full body, a caramel-like sweetness, and light notes of nuts and chocolate. The “speciaal” variant combines beans exclusively from Brazil and Colombia, resulting in a balanced flavor with almond, milk chocolate, and a velvety finish. Finally, there is a decaf option from Brazil and India, characterized by flavors of hazelnut, milk chocolate, and black tea. Customers can purchase these coffees in 250-gram tins, half-kilo and full-kilo bags, or as gift boxes.
Plantations and Processing
Transparency is central to the sourcing process. The original blend comes from Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza in Brazil, El Encanto in Colombia, and Craigmore Estate in India. These plantations are located at altitudes between 900 and 2,000 meters. The special blend uses beans from Fazenda Sao Silvestre in Minas Gerais and also El Encanto from Medellin, growing at altitudes ranging from 600 to 1,800 meters. The decaf variant utilizes Fazenda Lagoa and Karadykan Estate. The varieties range from Bourbon and Caturra to Robusta, utilizing both washed and unwashed processing methods.
Events and the Fleet
Ketelbinkie is a striking presence at Dutch festivals. Their fleet consists of two classic CitroB8;n HY vans, a Volkswagen T1, a Volkswagen T2, and a cargo bike. The brand serves coffee at events ranging from 10 to as many as 30,000 visitors. Major events such as the Wereldhavendagen, Defqon, and the Vierdaagsefeesten regularly utilize their services. Two barista’s in a CitroB8;n HY can easily serve 150 to 200 cups per hour. With larger setups, this capacity increases to as many as 800 servings per hour.
Corporate Market and Training
For the corporate market, the roastery provides maintenance and machines from Jura and WMF for offices. Hospitality clients benefit from targeted practical training directly on the work floor. Private consumers can set up subscriptions via the webshop with deliveries every four or six weeks. Knowledge sharing also takes place at the Rotterdam roastery. Here, the team organizes workshops for barista skills, filter coffee, cupping, and latte art. During a latte art session, participants learn, for example, how to pour three specific figures: the apple, the heart, and the tulip.
Team, Visibility, and Natte Thee
During the busy festival season, Steven Tacq manages a core team of five employees. In addition, the company employs over 35 part-time barista’s to man the vintage vehicles. Alongside coffee, Ketelbinkie also offers a tea assortment under the name “Natte Thee”. This tea line features seven direct-trade flavors, packaged in storage tins or refill pouches. The green tea is an authentic Chinese Mao Feng. The Ceylon comes from the Greenfield plantation in the Uva region of Sri Lanka. The media frequently picks up on the brand’s growth. Publications in Inside Rotterdam, Debuik, het AD, and Féte du Café confirm Ketelbinkie’s strong position. Furthermore, the public can visit their permanent spot at the Willemsplein in Rotterdam every weekend.
