More About La Jeu Coffee

La Jeu Coffee: Craftsmanship in a National Monument in ’s-Hertogenbosch

Since 2019, La Jeu Coffee has evolved into a brand, bar, shop, supplier, and coffee school. Their mission is clear: every single cup must be a success. In July 2021, they opened their public location in the historic De Drie Mollen building at Hinthamerstraat 190. This building has been linked to coffee since 1818 and holds the status of a national monument—a heritage the brand proudly embraces.

From Concept to a Place with a Story

Founder and head roaster Larissa Jeunink built upon years of experience in hospitality and a tenure at Illy. She later earned her Authorized SCA Trainer qualification in Paris. With the 2021 opening, La Jeu found a physical home that bridges the gap between the bar, retail, and education. This growth was celebrated locally, including their second anniversary in 2023, and continues to be shared via their blog and the press.

Roasting Philosophy, Freshness, and Flavor Profiles

La Jeu works exclusively with fairtrade Specialty Coffee with a quality threshold of 82+ points. Roasting takes place at the start of every week, ensuring that bags hit the shelves within that same week. For filter coffee, the focus is on light to medium roasts with a clean extraction. Education is the common thread throughout their process—from brewing advice to sensory training—ensuring that quality remains consistent from bean to experience.

Assortment, blends, and single origins

The permanent menu combines familiar espresso blends with fruity single-origin profiles. The lineup is curated for both espresso and filter, featuring clear tasting notes for each origin. This helps both professional baristas and home brewers make informed choices and fine-tune their recipes. Below are the signature coffees that currently make up the portfolio.

“Bosch Bakkie” Brazil: a classic espresso profile with dark chocolate, nuts, and toffee
Brazil–Colombia Blend: medium sweetness, full body, chocolate, hazelnut, and caramel
Rwanda Kirehe Gahara: fruity, ranging from blueberry to dried plum, with higher acidity
Colombia Santa Rita, Huila: green apple and milk chocolate, balanced sweetness
Indonesia Sumatra: spicy accents
Nicaragua San Juan Río Coco: creamy profile

Sourcing Model and Producer Relationships

The brand is committed to Specialty Coffee 82+ and advocates for fairtrade Specialty Coffee that ensures fair compensation for farmers. Current origins include Brazil, Colombia Huila Santa Rita, Rwanda Kirehe Gahara, Indonesia Sumatra, and Nicaragua San Juan Río Coco. Direct contact with producers is an explicit part of their fair coffee narrative, though specific farms, exporters, or import partners are not made public.

Sustainability, Ethics, and Community Impact

La Jeu links quality to concrete contributions. For every bag sold, 1% of the revenue goes to the International Women’s Coffee Alliance to support women in the coffee industry. Waste is tackled through Too Good To Go for surplus pastries. The interior showcases a commitment to reuse, featuring vintage equipment and furniture that keep the building's heritage visible.

Facilities, opening hours, and equipment

The location serves as a coffee bar, shop, supplier, and coffee school. Original mills and vintage machines pay homage to the building's nineteenth-century roasting history. The webshop carries espresso machines from Sage and VBM Domobar, emphasizing support for the home barista. Due to the cozy size of the shop, reservations are not possible.

Education and certification

As an Authorized SCA Trainer, Larissa Jeunink provides training that aligns with the practical realities of the bar and the roastery. There are regular paid workshops with strong reviews for beginners. Education takes place both on-site and at home, making the journey from bean to experience tangible.

Retail, partnerships, and brand visibility

La Jeu operates from a single location with an integrated webshop, supplementing its own roast selection with guest roasters. The brand reaches new audiences through curated collaborations, such as a specialized selection for a Coffee Lounge. Social media channels serve as the primary news source, providing updates on the team, packaging, and ongoing projects.

What this means for the Dutch coffee sector

La Jeu blends a heritage location with a modern specialty coffee approach. Their weekly roasting cadence, distinct flavor profiles, and accessible training make their offering highly relevant for cafés, baristas, and conscious consumers. The combination of 82+ quality, fair compensation, and visible community investment creates a consistent brand narrative that convinces both in the cup and throughout the supply chain.
