More About SINGLE ORIGIN COLOMBIA
Single Origin Colombia – Noord Coffee Roasters
Origin and farm
This Colombian coffee grows in the Andes, where a high-altitude microclimate and fertile soil allow the beans to develop fully. Around 500,000 family farms cultivate coffee in Colombia, mostly in mountainous areas where each elevation produces a different flavor. The country has more than twenty coffee regions (such as Huila, Santander and Tolima), each with its own climatic characteristics. Because of the rugged terrain, the focus is on harvest quality rather than quantity.
Roast profile
The Single Origin Colombia is a medium roast (following the American roast profile), which preserves the sweet fruit and chocolate aromas. The beans are 100% Arabica and are roasted fresh every week at the Noord roastery in Veghel. This results in a fresh, balanced cup with a clear fruity note.
Flavor and aroma
This coffee is distinguished by a full, complex body with a sweet, fruity finish. Typical flavor notes include chocolate and sweet fruit, matching the classic Colombian profiles with hints of almond and cherry. The acidity is bright and gentle, producing a balanced and pleasant taste. The result is a harmonious cup that delivers both sweetness and clarity.
Processing Method
Like many Colombian coffees, this one is probably washed (wet) processed. After harvesting, the cherries are pulped and the remaining mucilage ferments before being rinsed away with water. This produces a clean, transparent flavor that lets the bean’s natural character shine. According to the product information, this coffee uses the "Washed" method.
Variety and species
The beans are 100% Arabica (there is no Robusta in the blend). In Colombia, cultivars such as Caturra, Castillo and Typica are common for these beans, each adding subtle flavor differences. These Arabica varieties are adapted to high altitudes and give the coffee a soft, fruity foundation. The Arabica character means less bitterness and more sweetness in the cup.
Sustainability and ethics
Noord Coffee positions itself as a leader in sustainable coffee. The roastery buys its coffee directly from producers and pays fair prices, making the supply chain more equitable. Noord also uses eco-friendly packaging: deposit cans or recyclable paper bags. With this approach (featured in the ASN Bank Coffee Guide 2025) Noord shows that quality and sustainability go hand in hand.
Brewing Recommendations
- Use fresh, clean water at about 92 °C.
- For filter coffee, grind the beans to a medium-fine consistency (similar to table salt) and finer for espresso.
- Aim for roughly 60 grams of ground coffee per litre of water (about 1:16) for filter coffee.
- Brewed as filter coffee or in a French Press, the fruity and chocolate notes shine.
- It can also be used in an espresso machine, dose around 18–20 g for a double shot to get a creamy, full-bodied coffee.
Reviews and scores
According to Noord, this coffee scores 83+ in cupping, classifying it as specialty coffee. That is above the usual quality threshold of 80. Noord has no publicly listed awards or medals for this bean, but the high score and positive flavour impressions indicate high quality.
Packaging design
The packaging design highlights its artisanal and honest character. The beans come in a recyclable kraft bag with a one-way valve. The label features the origin ‘COLOMBIA’ in large letters, followed by tasting notes such as ‘Chocolate – Fruity – Complex’. The Noord logo and a red crown icon complete the look. On the back there is an English text about freshly roasted beans, reinforcing the handcrafted feel.
Availability and price
Single Origin Colombia is available through the Noord webshop (and in their store). The coffee is sold in 500-g and 1-kg bags. Pricing is roughly €18.51 for 500 g and €30.33 for 1 kg. A common promotion offers one free kilo when buying five kilos of beans, so 6 kg costs €151.65. This is especially attractive for offices or coffee lovers who brew large volumes.
