More About Serious Coffee
The Hybrid Approach of Serious Coffee
In the Dutch coffee market, many brands opt for hip urban cafés. Since November 2011, Serious Coffee from Chaam has been taking a completely different path. The company operates as a combined showroom, workshop, and roastery, focusing entirely on the serious home barista and the technical enthusiast.
Founder Hans Koot is the face of the business, bringing over twenty years of experience in the sale and repair of espresso machines. With a down-to-earth vision, the brand creates coffee for the enthusiastic drinker, devoid of pretension. On their website, they boldly claim to be the best espresso shop in Brabant.
Coffee Roasting and House Blends
Serious Coffee roasts its beans artisanally at its own location on the Florijnstraat. The assortment is small, streamlined, and perfectly suited for espresso. Customers can choose from four house blends sold by the kilo. The company intentionally uses different roast profiles to craft the best possible flavors.
The beans primarily originate from Latin America. A notable base is the Yellow Bourbon from Brazil, which is featured in all four blends. The selection consists of the following options:
Latin-Blend: Beans from Brazil and the Hondurese Copan with a light hint of cigar.
Pablo-Blend: A mix from Brazil and Colombia with hints of chocolate and caramel.
Oriental-Blend: Earthy tones and vanilla, thanks to a combination of Brazil and Java.
Nero Espressivo: A powerful Italian style with Yellow Bourbon as a solid base.
Although the website states that the beans are organic and fairtrade, no official certifications are displayed. However, the company roasts the beans fresh to order for their regular subscribers.
Innovation: The SC-ONE Emilia
What makes Serious Coffee unique is their commitment to building their own equipment. Hans Koot designed the SC-ONE Emilia entirely from scratch. This espresso machine offers precise temperature control via a touchscreen, and users can choose between an internal water tank or a direct water connection.
The machine reaches operating temperature in just six to seven minutes. The technical specs include dual stainless steel boilers, three PID controllers, and a patented brew group. Additionally, the pump is exceptionally quiet, and the machine offers options for stepless pressure profiling. Customers receive a standard three-year warranty on this energy-efficient system.
Service, Education, and Subscriptions
The company doesn’t just sell new machines; they also offer refurbished trade-in models with a three-month warranty. Their technical workshop focuses heavily on E61 systems. Notably, they consciously choose not to repair fully automatic machines, highlighting their clear technical niche. Since June 2022, the business has also been an officially recognized SBB learning company.
Customers are welcome in the showroom Tuesday through Friday afternoons, and on Saturday mornings. Here, they provide personalized advice and targeted barista workshops. Hans Koot also serves as the point of contact for CasaBarista Breda-Chaam, further expanding their regional reach through a national network of seven stores.
For loyal coffee drinkers, there is a flexible subscription available. This can be set up weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or every six weeks. Packages are always shipped on Wednesdays via PostNL, with free delivery on orders of two kilograms or more.
A Unique Position in the Market
Serious Coffee seamlessly combines four roles under one roof. As a roaster, shop, workshop, and machine builder, the company offers a rare form of vertical integration. In doing so, they serve the true espresso enthusiast in a successful and refreshingly down-to-earth manner.
