Uganda Kasese is a single origin specialty from Koffiehuis Coffyn from the Rwenzori in western Uganda. The 100 percent Arabica SL14 and SL28 grow at 1,500 to 2,000 meters and are processed using the fully washed method. Coffyn roasts light to medium for filter coffee, resulting in a balanced cup with full notes of milk chocolate, a fresh hint of orange and sweet accents of caramel. Farmers work in cooperatives and receive fair prices, while shade trees promote biodiversity. Brewing advice: grind medium-coarse and use 6 grams per 100 milliliters of water at 92°C. Uganda Kasese is freshly roasted and available in multiple pack sizes.

More About Uganda Kasese

Uganda Kasese is a single-origin coffee from Koffiehuis Coffyn (Malden) with a rich flavor palette. This Ugandan specialty displays notes of chocolate and citrus, and is prized by both connoisseurs and coffee professionals.

Origin and Cultivation

  • Sourced from Kasese in the Rwenzori Mountains of western Uganda.
  • Coffee shrubs grow at about 1,500–2,000 meters elevation in fertile mountain soil.
  • Thousands of smallholder farmers cultivate the coffee on their own plots.
  • Farmers deliver their coffee cherries to local washing stations, where careful processing takes place.
  • Banana trees planted among the coffee provide shade and keep the soil healthy.

Roast profile

  • Coffyn roasts this coffee light to medium, tuned for filter brewing.
  • The beans are artisan-roasted in small batches for maximum freshness.
  • The gentle roast preserves the sweet and fruity notes.
  • The roast yields a balanced cup: not too bitter, with mild acidity.
  • The roasting process is carefully monitored to achieve the desired flavour balance.

Flavor and aroma

  • The flavour profile offers rich milk-chocolate notes that create a soft, creamy base.
  • A bright hint of orange citrus adds a lively, fruity note to every sip.
  • Sweet notes of caramel or brown sugar round off the flavour profile.
  • The aroma is appealing and lightly floral; some even detect a hint of jasmine.
  • As the coffee cools, extra citrus notes (such as grapefruit) emerge in the aftertaste.

Processing Method

  • After picking, the coffee undergoes a fully washed process.
  • The coffee cherries are depulped and fermented for about 24 hours to loosen the pulp.
  • Next, the beans are washed and spread out to dry on raised beds.
  • Drying takes approximately 1–2 weeks in the sun, with regular turning for consistency.
  • The washed method yields a clean, bright cup that allows the chocolate and citrus nuances to shine.

Variety and species

  • Uganda Kasese is 100% Arabica coffee.
  • The varieties are mainly SL14 and SL28, common cultivars in Uganda.
  • These varieties were developed in Kenya and thrive in Uganda's highlands.
  • SL14 and SL28 produce a sweet, balanced cup with delicate fruity undertones.
  • Although Uganda grows a lot of Robusta, this Arabica from Kasese showcases the country's specialty potential.

Sustainability and ethics

  • Farmers in Kasese collaborate in cooperatives to secure fairer prices for their coffee.
  • Initiatives such as Agri Evolve train farmers and guarantee a fair price for quality.
  • The Rwenzori region holds a Protected Geographical Indication (GI) for coffee from this unique area.
  • Many farmers grow their coffee naturally—often organically—under shade trees, which benefits biodiversity.
  • Coffyn selects this coffee with a focus on sustainability and fair trade, ensuring benefits for both the environment and the community.

Brewing Recommendations

  • For best results, brew with filter methods (V60, Chemex, or drip brewer) and enjoy the coffee black to taste every nuance.
  • Grind the beans medium-coarse for filter brewing; grinding fresh just before brewing yields the best flavour.
  • Use 6 grams of coffee per 100 ml of water (1:16–1:17) for a balanced cup.
  • Use water at 92 °C; water that is too hot can introduce bitterness and water that is too cold will leave the coffee weak.
  • Pour steadily and let the coffee brew for about 2½–3 minutes for optimal extraction.

Prices and reviews

  • This coffee scores highly in specialty cupping: around 85/100 points.
  • Professional tasters appreciate the balance of sweetness, fruitiness, and body in Kasese coffee.
  • In 2024, Ugandan roasters won multiple medals (including gold) at a leading coffee competition in Paris.
  • Kasese coffee contributes to Uganda’s reputation as an emerging producer of premium specialty coffee.
  • Consumers and baristas give glowing feedback, praising its full flavor and unique aroma.

Packaging design

  • Coffyn supplies Uganda Kasese in bags of 250 g, 500 g, or 1,000 g.
  • The packaging has a one-way valve that allows CO₂ to escape while preventing air from entering.
  • Thanks to this valve and the sturdy foil, the coffee stays fresh and aromatic for longer after roasting.
  • Each bag is resealable, allowing you to store the beans after opening without loss of quality.
  • The label lists origin, flavour profile and roast date for transparency.

Availability and price

  • Uganda Kasese is available at Koffiehuis Coffyn – both in the physical shop and through the webshop.
  • A 250-gram bag costs about €7.40; larger packages (such as 1 kg) are relatively cheaper per kilo.
  • You can choose whole beans or ground coffee when ordering, depending on your brew method.
  • Coffyn roasts batches regularly, so this coffee is fresh and almost always in stock.
  • As a single-origin from a specific harvest, availability can vary slightly year to year, but the coffee is usually offered all year round.
