More About From Bean to Brew

A Social Coffee Roastery in Bodegraven
Marcel and Linda Mook started Van Boon tot Bakkie in 2020. During the pandemic, their passion grew into a serious business. Recently, the social coffee roastery established itself at Kerkstraat 34 in Bodegraven. The mission is clear and socially driven. The company strives for fair prices for both the farmer and the consumer. Founder Marcel consciously distances himself from the exploitation by major players in the market. The strong bond with Haiti serves as a major source of inspiration; it is the birth country of their two adopted sons. The owners aim to make a structural contribution to the living environment in this specific country.
Fair Trade and Climate-Friendly Logistics
The roastery sources its coffee exclusively through fair trade routes. In 2022, their beans already hailed from nine different countries, with seven falling under Direct Trade and two under Fair Trade. Today, this sustainable sourcing policy is a strict rule across their entire range. A particularly unique story is the coffee line from Haiti; these beans travel to the Netherlands by sailboat via Stichting Trade Hommes. This choice demonstrates a strong commitment to climate-friendly transport. In October 2022, the company received the local Fairtrade sticker as official recognition for this transparent approach.
The Assortment: From Bright to Bold
The range offers diverse flavor profiles for the true coffee enthusiast. The coffee is always roasted locally in Bodegraven. To save precious energy, the brand only roasts once a minimum quantity has been reached. Their permanent selection is rich and varied.

Fris Bakkie: A medium-roasted 100% Arabica blend with bright citrus notes.
Warm Bakkie: A versatile mix of Arabica and Indian Robusta, perfect for both filter and espresso.
Rijk Bakkie and Stoer Bakkie: Robust roasts with full-bodied notes of cocoa and warm spices.
Borfts Bakkie: A local tribute crafted from high-quality beans from four different countries.

Additionally, the brand offers an organic and Fairtrade certified Peru single origin. For the evening, there is the decaffeinated Avond Bakkie Colombia. Beyond coffee, the shop sells five types of organic tea and fair bean-to-bar chocolate. Furthermore, their website inspires customers with recipes for Affogato and refreshing Iced Caramel coffee.
Inclusivity in the Workplace
Social impact forms the daily foundation of the entire operation. At least half of the team consists of people with a distance to the labor market, who work with great dedication in production or behind the scenes. Employee Ben is a beautiful and tangible example of this; together with the team, he developed his very own blend. His product, Ben’s Bakkie, cleverly combines Brazilian Yellow Bourbon with Tanzanian beans. The roastery works intensively with local social partners such as Gemiva Gouda and MBO-Rijnland. Thanks in part to this fruitful collaboration, design partner Posterum was able to get their own start.
Circular Ambitions and Sustainability
Circular entrepreneurship is receiving a surprisingly high level of practical attention on the shop floor. Customers who bring their own containers receive an immediate discount: one euro off for coffee and fifty cents for tea. The company consistently gives waste materials a useful second life. Old jute bean sacks are transformed into sturdy, reusable tote bags. The coffee bean chaff, or “skaf”, enriches the soil at Hortus Populus. Used coffee grounds serve as the ideal nutrient base for local oyster mushrooms. Beans with minor imperfections after roasting end up in a DIY kit for delicious coffee liqueur. This circular approach earned the roastery the sustainability award “De Groene Pluim” in September 2024. The committee praised its direct alignment with the global SDGs 8, 12, 13, and 17.
Experience and Business Growth
Visitors can discover the atmospheric roastery four days a week. The doors are wide open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, with standard opening hours from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. While the business currently attracts primarily private consumers, the focus is quietly shifting toward the B2B market, a growth ambition underscored by a dedicated business page. To further engage enthusiastic coffee lovers, the roastery regularly organizes educational coffee workshops. For thirty-five euros per person, participants can dive into the complete story, discovering every step from distant cultivation and local harvest to the final roast.
