About Gedeelde Weelde

Gedeelde Weelde in Maastricht: cooperative, shop, and café

Gedeelde Weelde is registered as Coöperatie Gedeelde Weelde B.A. at Petrus Regoutplein 2 in Maastricht. The location is situated in the Eiffelgebouw, within the Sphinxkwartier. The cooperative store opened to the public on February 18, 2019. Their own communications distinguish between the opening hours of the store and those of the café.

Origins and Organization

Public sources list Bram de Volder, Christiane Gronenberg, Dominique Sleijpen, Luuk Rövekamp, and Robin van Hontem as the initiators. Not all of their individual professional backgrounds are documented in public records. However, it is noted that Luuk Rövekamp was familiar with Odin, a Dutch cooperative chain of organic supermarkets, during the development of the model.

The concept is described as a cooperative food store with a café. The organization operates on the principle of a shop and meeting place “by and for the community.” Members can participate through general member meetings, working groups, activities, and member gatherings. As a result, the structure is not only focused on sales but also on shared ownership and engagement.

Gedeelde Weelde describes its guiding principles as “earth care, people care, and fair share.” In practice, the cooperative links these terms to ownership by consumers, producers, and retailers. The organization also highlights attention to local and regional producers, seasonal products, packaging, transport, and direct relationships with suppliers.

Coffee and Brewing

For coffee drinkers, the collaboration with Maastricht roaster Blanche Dael is particularly relevant. This partnership began in the spring of 2019. Gedeelde Weelde documented three coffees from Blanche Dael: Kachalú from Colombia, Sidamo from Ethiopia, and Peru Amazonas. According to available information, the selection was established through tastings.

In the café, Peru Amazonas was listed as the coffee for espresso. Sidamo was used for “regular coffee,” described by Gedeelde Weelde as lungo. The publicly documented preparations include espresso, lungo or regular coffee, cappuccino, and coffee in the café. A complete current coffee menu or a full list of brewing methods is not recorded in the available sources.

In 2024, information also appeared regarding “sailed coffee beans” in the bulk section. These beans were described as Colombian coffee transported to Amsterdam by sailing cargo ship and subsequently roasted by IDorganics in Zaandam. The mentioned chain also included Cooagronevada in Colombia. The event information linked this coffee to organic farming, fair trade, and women’s well-being, but did not include a complete café menu.

Sustainability and Sourcing

The sustainability claims of Gedeelde Weelde are primarily linked to the broader store and cooperative structure. The organization mentions environmentally conscious transport, seasonal products, valuable packaging, and strong, fair relationships between producers, retailers, and consumers. At its launch in 2019, the store concept was described as a fully organic assortment, with an emphasis on fresh products and a large share of local and regional items.

Regarding coffee, Gedeelde Weelde stated that the selected Blanche Dael beans were considered organic in quality, although there were limitations regarding certification at that time. Later, the cooperative reported that Blanche Dael was certified, allowing the roaster to use the organic label itself. Gedeelde Weelde stated that the cooperative had proposed, encouraged, and supported this certification.

Community and activities

The agenda of Gedeelde Weelde shows that the café and store also function as a venue for activities. Documented events include tastings, workshops, general member meetings, concerts, film screenings, excursions, lectures, exhibitions in the café, and drop-in cafés. These activities are aimed at members and sometimes also at non-members.

Coffee-related activities are also documented. On October 14, 2021, an information evening and tasting with Blanche Dael took place. On October 22, 2022, an open day at the Blanche Dael roastery was organized for customers and members of Gedeelde Weelde. Additionally, on March 5, 2020, a Matcha Green Tea workshop and ceremony was held in the store.

The drop-in cafés have an informative character. Visitors can get to know the cooperative, the store, the café, and the community there. The member structure is further reflected in voting rights during the general assembly, participation in working groups, active member services, and gatherings for members.

Collaborations and Public Attention

In addition to coffee, the documentation also mentions collaborations related to lunch. In 2021, partnerships with Athos EET, Café Zondag, and De Brandweerkantine were described. In 2022, Athos EET was again listed as one of the external caterers for the café.

Gedeelde Weelde has received attention in various public sources since its preparation and opening. Biojournaal reported on February 8, 2019, about the opening as a cooperative shop in Maastricht. Netwerk Platteland described the project as a LEADER-supported cooperative. In 2023, Collectieve Kracht published a profile of Gedeelde Weelde as a multi-stakeholder cooperative.

The organization’s own media archives further mention an interview with Luuk Rövekamp and Christiane Gronenberg in Dagblad de Limburger in 2016, the Slow Food Limburg trophy on June 2, 2019, a mention in the Groen Lintje 2020, a feature in Seizoener, and coverage by RTV Maastricht. Public platforms also refer to Gedeelde Weelde as a market and café offering local and organic products, with labeled vegan options.
