Kustwijk

Kustwijk does not have an old café street, but rather a practical coffee landscape shaped by Batavia Stad, the harbour and neighbourhood spots such as De Dukdalf.

Kustwijk: A Coffee Culture Without the Traditional Cafe Street

Kustwijk in Lelystad lacks a classic coffee culture characterized by old coffee houses, student plazas, or historic roasteries. The district is young, planned, and closely integrated with residential living, waterfronts, retail, and leisure. The municipality includes Boeier, Galjoen, Jol, Karveel, Punter, Stadseiland, Suyderseeboulevard, Bataviahaven, and Houtribhoogte as part of Kustwijk. Consequently, the coffee scene is dispersed rather than concentrated around a single bustling cafe street.

The primary takeaway is precisely the absence of a long-standing coffee tradition. There are few publicly verifiable traces of old coffee houses, local roasters, or early specialty pioneers within Kustwijk. Instead, the neighborhood feels like a modern residential and waterfront area. Here, coffee evolved alongside daily routines, museum visits, outlet shopping, and the hospitality scene surrounding the harbor.

Retail and the Harbor Shape the Modern Coffee Landscape

A turning point for local coffee demand was the opening of Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet in 2001. This center was the first outlet center in the Netherlands. Following its third expansion in 2017, it grew to approximately 150 stores and 250 fashion brands. This created a clear demand for quick espressos, bakery coffee, sweet coffee drinks, and recognizable brands for visitors.

As a result, the most visible coffee landscape in Kustwijk is located around Bataviaplein. Coffeecompany Bataviastad at Bataviaplein 256 is the most specialty-oriented player. The brand refers to its start in 1996, its 37 locations, an Amsterdam roastery, direct relationships with farmers, and a pricing policy that rewards quality. While the Kustwijk location is not a roastery itself, it brings a distinct quality-focused vocabulary to the outlet area.

Additionally, Twelve12 Coffee & Bakery at Bataviaplein 87 serves visitors who pair their coffee with pastries, bowls, toast, and a warm shopping break. Starbucks at Bataviaplein 56 targets a broad audience with flat whites, caramel macchiatos, Frappuccinos, snacks, and lunch. Together, these establishments do not form a compact third-wave neighborhood, but they do provide a robust coffee infrastructure for the many passersby.

  • Coffeecompany Bataviastad: A quality-driven chain concept within Batavia Stad.
  • Twelve12 Coffee & Bakery: An all-day stop for coffee, sweets, and light meals.
  • Starbucks Batavia Stad: “an international chain for recognizable and quick coffee moments.”
  • “De Rede van Bataviahaven:” “a waterfront terrace and lunch spot.”
  • “Restaurant De Taveerne:” “museum hospitality at Batavialand for coffee, cake, and lunch.”

“Coffee as social glue in the neighborhood”

“Beyond retail, Kustwijk has a second, quieter coffee layer. This one revolves around residents, connection, and well-being. De Dukdalf at Punter 35-27 serves as a key anchor point here. The Monday LWPC walking club and the Friday walking group wrap up their activities with coffee and conversation. This ensures that coffee here isn’t a trend product, but a fixed social ritual.”

“Buurtkamer Trefpunt in De Dukdalf also fits this picture. The community room organizes weekday moments for contact, support, and meals. In coffee terms, this shows that the strongest local habits are accessible and community-oriented. They are less about latte art and more about recognition, conversation, and simply walking in together.”

“This role also reappears during the Pleingesprekken in Jol. There, Centrada, Welzijn Lelystad, the police, and district councils meet residents around a coffee cart. Because Wijkraad Kustwijk is involved, coffee takes on a clear function as a tool for listening, contact, and improving the quality of life.”

“Who drinks coffee here?”

“The local flavor is shaped by a stable residential area and a strong flow of visitors. In 2026, Kustwijk had 13,005 inhabitants, 5,550 homes, and 5,645 households. Of these homes, 74 percent were owner-occupied. The average household size was 2.3 people. This points to a residential area with fixed routines, rather than a transient student market.”

“The age demographics support this image. In 2026, 16 percent of residents were 0 to 15 years old, 11 percent 15 to 25, 24 percent 25 to 45, 27 percent 45 to 65, and 21 percent 65 or older. In 2025, 38 percent of households consisted of multi-person households with children. Consequently, coffee fits perfectly here with walking groups, family visits, museum days, lunch breaks, and harbor terraces.”

“Internationality also plays a role, though without a clear niche around one specific coffee culture. In 2025, 32 percent of residents had origins outside the Netherlands. Furthermore, Batavia Stad attracts both national and international visitors. This supports menus with recognizable choices, variety, and sweet options. However, there is no strong evidence of a specific Turkish, Ethiopian, or Latin American coffee scene within the neighborhood boundaries.”

“Sustainability: primarily through chains and the outlet area”

“Sustainability is present, but primarily through corporate chain policies and the Batavia Stad grounds. There is no confirmed neighborhood-wide collaboration regarding coffee grounds, reusable cups, or bike delivery of locally roasted beans. Coffeecompany will charge a surcharge of  €0.10 for disposable plastic cups starting July 1. Conversely, guests receive a  €0.20 discount when using their own cup for coffee or tea to go.”

Batavia Stad is making reuse visible through refill cups and special promotions. During the Fashion Club Days from March 27 to 30, 2025, new Fashion Club members received a refill coffee cup for free coffee at Coffeecompany. In October 2025, a VIP event featured free coffee via the Fashion Club Refill Cup, as well as free cake with a hot drink for Gold members.

Starbucks also contributed to this trend with a reopening promotion where customers temporarily received a reusable Starbucks cup with their order. On a regional level, Batavia Stad also emphasizes waste separation, reduced water and energy consumption, biodiversity, green travel options, train accessibility, and charging stations. Kustwijk may not have an old “coffee soul,” but it does have a clear profile: practical, social, visitor-oriented, and strongly connected to the planned coastal district surrounding it.
