The Origin and the Passion for Surfing
Badeta Koffiebranders was founded in 2014 by friends Tomas Verlaan and Joost Hak. They share a background in hospitality and a passion for coffee and surfing. They apply the patience and precise timing from surf culture to the coffee roasting process. Their adventure in the coffee world started in the Amsterdam neighborhood De Pijp. In the beginning, the founders hired an external roaster in the city of Rotterdam. Today, they roast independently at their own location at Achter Oosteinde 14H in Amsterdam.
This space, better known as De Branderij, also serves as an educational center for workshops. The team uses high-end equipment, such as a Probat roaster and Slayer machines for quality control. Twice a week, they roast the beans here to guarantee maximum freshness. The company currently has an estimated eleven to fifty enthusiastic employees.
Direct Trade and Sustainability
Badeta works closely with coffee farmers in countries such as Brazilié, Colombia, Peru, and Ethiopié. Transparency is central, and every coffee comes with a card containing information about the producer. They structurally pay more than the regular market prices for the purchase of the beans. This supports the farmers and encourages environmentally conscious and sustainable farming methods. Building direct, long-term relationships with small-scale producers is a fundamental part of their mission.
They collaborate with several renowned farming families across the globe. Some of Badeta’s most significant and long-standing partnerships include:

Eduardo from the Pedra Preta estate in Brazil, who receives an additional premium for his research into forestry.
The experienced Peralta farming family from the fertile coffee regions’s of Nicaragua.
The Vargas family, working their expansive coffee plantations in Brazil.
Juan Andrés Gutiérrez, a dedicated and well-known coffee producer based in El Salvador.

The Specialty Coffee Range
The roastery’s selection offers a diverse mix of flavors and roast profiles. These coffees reflect a blend of traditional craftsmanship and the adventurous discoveries made during the founders’ travels. The company’s signature coffees and bestsellers include the following:

Steady Eddy: The original house blend featuring tasting notes of walnut, chocolate, and apricot.
Brazilië Samba Reserve: A Brazilian single origin coffee full of caramelized and spicy accents.
Colombia La Victoria: A classic from Huila with notes of chocolate and dark cane sugar.
Ethiopië Chelbesa: Floral and citrusy, produced by 672 farmers in Yirgacheffe at an altitude of 2,173 meters.

Furthermore, the selection includes other exceptional varieties for the adventurous drinker. Examples include the Costa Rica Corazon de Jesus, the Colombia Peach Geisha, and the Peru Decaf.
Local Growth and Accolades
They now operate several of their own cafés in the Amsterdam neighborhoods of De Pijp and Watergraafsmeer. Additionally, a successful location can be found on the bustling Van Woustraat. Beyond the physical cafés, the company also supplies coffee to offices and external hospitality businesses. Business clients also gain access to machine storage and free barista training for their own staff. An integrated webshop sells coffee beans, convenient subscriptions, and various equipment for home baristas’s.
During the Amsterdam Coffee Festival of 2024, Badeta reached an impressive and beautiful milestone. The team made it to the final eight and took third place in the challenging Roast Masters competition. This strong result confirms their position within the high-end specialty coffee market. With over four thousand followers on Instagram and active events, the local community remains closely involved.
