More About Bocca Coffee

Bocca Coffee at a glance
Bocca Coffee was founded in 2001 by brothers Menno and Tewis Simons. The brand started by supplying local cafés and grew into one of the early Dutch pioneers in specialty coffee. Its roots lie in Ethiopia, where the first contacts were established that would later guide their sourcing strategy.
The first roasts took place on a small Probat in a garage in Amsterdam, selling to friends and neighbors. In 2015, Bocca opened a flagship espresso bar and training space on the Kerkstraat in the center of Amsterdam. In November 2021, their twentieth anniversary was marked with a reflection on the past and a look toward the future.
Team and Leadership
Menno Simons is the driving force and public face of Bocca and also founded the green coffee importer Trabocca, with a strong focus on East Africa. Co-founder Tewis Simons played an active role in the early years. Operationally, the organization is led by figures such as Operations Manager Jeroen Bol, while quality is maintained by roasters and QC specialists like Denis Brasileiro.
The company size ranges between 11 and 50 employees, fitting for a specialized roaster that combines craftsmanship with streamlined processes.
Roasting with data and consistency
Bocca roasts daily to order in small batches. Each batch is tasted and evaluated by experienced cuppers to ensure consistent quality. Daily cuppings and quality control are integral parts of the work in the roastery.
The roaster contributes roast profiles to the widely used Roast Curve Library, demonstrating process transparency and a data-driven approach. In 2018, Bocca hosted the tenth anniversary of Cropster in Amsterdam, highlighting their close tie to professional roast logging and analysis tools. The brand positions itself as the first Dutch specialty roaster with full supply chain control from bean to cup.
Sourcing and partnerships
Long-term relationships form the foundation of their sourcing. In Ethiopia, Bocca collaborates with Tesfaye Bekele’s Suke Quto Farm, the Reko washing station, and Guji projects led by Haile, developed in coordination with Bocca and Trabocca. In Brazil, Fazenda Passeio and Fazenda Lagoa are mainstays in various blends.
Bocca participates in Operation Cherry Red, a smallholder program in Ethiopia focused on better traceability and premiums. A True Price analysis mentions 245 hectares of Brazilian coffee land across Passeio and Lagoa, and 47.5 hectares of coffee within 137 hectares in the Peruvian Namballe region. Sourcing is publicly linked to Trabocca’s networks, maintaining direct, long-term producer relationships.
Assortment and Flavor Profiles
The core range includes “Soulmate“ (Brazil), “Bombita“, “Easy Rider“, “The Blend“, “Gusto“, “Ethiopia“ and “Los Amigos“. Pioneer single origins such as “Kamwangi“ from Kenya emphasize origin transparency and flavor exploration. “The Blend“ was the very first blend and is considered a delicately balanced bestseller.
Decafs are processed via CO₂ or Swiss Water to preserve aromatic characteristics. Standard packaging comes in 250 and 500 grams, supplemented by larger hospitality and office formats, available as whole bean or ground. Specials, such as “La Donna“, were co-created with approximately thirty women and combine Ethiopian and Brazilian components. Additionally, there are “Specialty Coffee Capsules“ for compatible systems.
Production and reach
The roastery, training center, and office are located at De Regge 37, 8253 PG Dronten. The reported annual output is approximately 200,000 kilograms, with distribution reaching as far as Hong Kong. Roasting is done daily to order to guarantee freshness and batch consistency.
The espresso bar and consumer-focused training hub in Amsterdam showcase the roasts and provide direct market feedback. The wholesale network serves offices and hospitality throughout the Netherlands.
School of Coffee and training
Located at Kerkstraat 96H, 1017 GP Amsterdam, Bocca operates an espresso bar, a training center, and the School of Coffee. Their offerings are open to the public and can be booked online in both Dutch and English.
The workshop program includes:

Brewing at Home, 2 hours
Espresso at Home, 2 hours
Coffee Tasting, 3 hours

Sustainability and Transparency

The company is a member of the Futureproof Coffee Collective by MVO Nederland and works on impact measurement and improvement at the farm level. Organic coffees are part of the assortment, such as “Gusto“ and “Ethiopia“. This approach aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals and emphasizes long-term sourcing.
B2B, private label, and services
For business clients, Bocca offers private label services starting from 500 kilograms per year, with packaging options of 250 grams, 500 grams, 1 kilogram, 3 kilograms, or 4 kilograms. Options include B Corp listing, BIO, and decaf, along with design support.
Contract roasting is combined with fulfillment, storage, and inventory management, custom branding, and shipping solutions for subscriptions or wholesale. For offices and the hospitality sector, Bocca provides consultancy, installation, maintenance, and team training via the School of Coffee. According to B2B materials, more than 450 companies now partner with Bocca.
Recognition and Visibility
Their reputation has been built in part on awards and media attention. Bocca won “Best Artisan Roaster “ Europe” at the Allegra European Coffee Awards 2014. Menno Simons received the Amsterdamse Ondernemersprijs in November 2018. Publications such as Sprudge and The Coffeevine highlighted the brand early on, as did local lists of top coffee spots in Amsterdam.
What this means for the Dutch market
For cafés, baristas, and roasters, Bocca provides a benchmark for supply chain management, consistent quality, and demonstrable impact. The combination of long-term producer relationships, transparent roasting, and an active educational program creates a scalable model. As such, the brand remains relevant for professionals who want to unite taste, origin, and responsibility in every cup.
