More About Bosbrand Koffiebranderij

Bosbrand Koffiebranderij: From Hospitality Roots to a Mature Brand

In Apeldoorn, Bosbrand Koffiebranderij evolved from a hospitality initiative into an independent roastery with a clear vision. It all began in 2015 at café "Schenkers," where they used a 1 kg Toper to serve the best coffee in town. Today, the team presents a professional assortment, their own production facility at the Zwitsal site, and a service model steeped in hospitality experience, a service-oriented mindset, and a focus on training.

From Café to Roastery: A Brief Timeline

The official roastery opened on June 10, 2017, under the Bosbrand brand, initially operating a second-hand 10 kg Has Garanti. In 2021, production moved to the former Zwitsal complex on Vlijtseweg to allow for more space and growth. In early 2023, "Schenkers" closed to focus entirely on roasting; they acquired the inventory of Bitter & Real and commissioned a yellow Diedrich IR-12 as their primary roaster. This marked Bosbrand's definitive shift from a café-roaster to a professional producer.

Leadership and Team

Founder and owner Matt van Maastricht defines the brand strategy and sourcing vision. Roaster Jochem Pieper later brought structure and systematic precision to the roasting process. The team comes explicitly from the hospitality sector, translating that background into training, service, and strong partnerships with wholesale clients.

Roasting philosophy and technology

Current production runs on a custom Diedrich IR-12 drum roaster. For Coffee to Care lots, they roast just before the second crack to preserve sweetness and avoid bitter roast notes. Select origins, such as Brazil and Nicaragua, are offered in separate espresso and filter profiles. High-end releases, such as the "Geisha Huila Special," are filter-only to emphasize clarity and fruitiness.

Assortment, blends, and single origins

The selection combines familiar flavor profiles with traceable origins, centered around four key pillars.

“Sweet Choco Spice” Nicaragua: a bestseller featuring notes of chocolate, honey, and spices, carrying a Fairtrade Organic certification.
“Silky Bonbon” Brazil: a core line staple since day one, with notes of caramel, hazelnut, and milk chocolate.
“Geisha Huila Special” Colombia: a microlot from La Cumbre, featuring raspberry, grapefruit, and cherry, roasted specifically for filter coffee.
“Bosbrand Budget Roast” Uganda: positioned for home or office super-automatic machines.

Sourcing Model and Partners

The green coffee selection focuses on Arabica from high-altitude regions. Nicaragua is highlighted for its volcanic soils, which contribute spice and intensity. Bosbrand works with transparent import partners like This Side Up, prioritizing traceability and relationships at the source. Origins are clearly displayed on the packaging, such as La Cumbre in Huila for the Geisha microlot. The Nicaragua assortment carries a Fairtrade Organic sourcing certificate.

Production, Location, and Sustainability

Since 2021, the roastery has operated fully from Vlijtseweg 108, 7317 AG Apeldoorn, at the Zwitsal location. The Diedrich IR-12 serves as the primary machine, complemented by an in-house packaging line that facilitates contract and white-label work. To reduce packaging waste, reusable red-and-white hospitality tubs have been used since day one. The roastery is not a retail storefront; sales are handled online and through selected local businesses. Sustainability is reflected in their reuse policies, fair pricing, and transparent supply chain choices.

Wholesale, Private Label, and Services

Their services are designed to help partners grow, combining a strong service component with customized options.

Roasting services: contract roasting on the Diedrich IR-12 for external coffee brands.
Private label: including blend development, roast profiles, and custom packaging design.
Hospitality program: competitive margins, free barista training, service support, and complimentary tableware packages.
B2B cases, including a collaboration with FuturumShop “High Performance Coffee”.

Distribution and Points of Sale

The webshop features core origins such as Brazil, Nicaragua, Peru decaf, Colombia specials, and Uganda, with filters for origin and weight. In Apeldoorn, beans can be found at locations including Mansion24, Bakkerij Keurhorst, Hopdonders, and FIK Kaarsen. Communication via the website and Instagram emphasizes their Apeldoorn roots and direct-to-consumer online sales.

Social Impact and Contract Philosophy

Through 'Coffee to Care,' Bosbrand links coffee sales to a social cause by supporting Leprazending. Furthermore, the brand explicitly rejects restrictive lock-in contracts, preferring to build relationships based on customer choice. This approach aligns with their transparent sourcing via partners like This Side Up and strengthens trust throughout the supply chain.

Media and Collaborations

Local and specialty media have tracked their growth. Early coverage appeared in 2016, followed by a profile in Mister Barish in 2018, and in 2021, indebuurt Apeldoorn published an extensive interview regarding their relocation and ambitions. In December 2024, this was followed by a limited collaboration with rapper Brainpower, “Door Merg & Brain”, where the blend's composition was shared publicly.
