More About De Zeeuwse Branding
The Origin of a Zeeland Roastery
Between 2015 and 2016, an ambitious coffee brand emerged in Zeeland. Founder Rob Clarijs, born in Zierikzee, wanted to give his province a full-fledged specialty coffee identity. His passion for coffee began as a barista at Douwe Egberts and as a roaster at Stielman. During an internship in Copenhagen, he was definitively inspired by the local coffee culture and hospitality. The maritime character of Zeeland forms the foundation of the brand. This is directly visible in product names such as Windkracht 4, Windkracht 6, Wervelwind, and Windstil.
Fair Chain and Transparent Trade
De Zeeuwse Branding makes a resolute choice for a fair trade chain. The brand avoids the standard C-market for coffee pricing. This ensures that farmers and pickers always receive a fair payment, regardless of fluctuating global market prices. The chain remains short and transparent: from the farmer or washing station, via the importer, directly to the roastery. In some cases, the company imports the green coffee itself.
The brand nurtures strong relationships with producers worldwide. In Brazil, Patrícia from São Sebastião da Gramma provides the basis for the house blends. For the Colombian contribution, the company works with Wilton Benitez from farm La Macarena and the Argote family. The Ethiopian beans come from Hester and the Taferi Kela community via partner Bette Buna. The decaffeinated ‘Windstil’ varies in origin by season. Countries such as Colombia, Honduras, India, and Guatemala rotate in the offering to keep the stock always fresh and young.
Freshness and the Windkracht Assortment
Freshness is an absolute core value for the company. The roastery roasts weekly and intentionally prints the roast date on every package instead of an expiration date. The optimal flavor profile is found within the first one to two months after roasting. Customers are strongly advised not to purchase more than they can consume within a single month.
The core assortment is specifically tailored to different brewing methods:
Windkracht 4: A fresh, complex, and light roast from Brazil, Colombia, and Ethiopia. Recommended for espresso and slow coffee (available in 350g, 1kg, and 5kg).
Windkracht 6: A darker blend from the same regions’s, featuring notes of chocolate and nuts. Crafted for powerful espresso and automatic machines.
Wervelwind (Windkracht 8): The most robust and dark coffee, packed in 350g bags. Perfect for those seeking a bold cup from an automatic machine.
Windstil: A decaffeinated coffee with warm flavors of dark chocolate and spices.
Hospitality, Equipment, and Events
De Zeeuwse Branding acts as a versatile partner for the hospitality sector, from small cafés to large beach pavilions. The company supplies professional equipment from top brands such as Sanremo, La Marzocco, Kees van der Westen, Mahlkönig, and Eversys. Hospitality clients are standardly offered a basic barista course. This guarantees the highest quality and proper preparation on the work floor.
Café de Gekroonde Suikerbiet in Zierikzee has been a loyal ambassador from the very start. This café was featured in the Misset Café Top 100 for four consecutive years and won the national title in 2017. In addition to permanent hospitality locations, the brand is active at events with a mobile espresso bar and food truck, requiring only a power outlet. Well-known names such as Alpro, Bever, and Rijkswaterstaat are among their previous corporate clients.
Award-Winning Quality and Unique Collaborations
The quality of the roastery is underscored by the achievements of its founder. In April 2019, Rob Clarijs won the prestigious Coffee Masters at The London Coffee Festival. He defeated fifteen other baristas across eight disciplines and scored a perfect thirty points with his signature drink. That same year, he also took silver at the Dutch Brewers Cup Championship and bronze at the Dutch Cup Tasters Championship.
The roastery is also known for its unique culinary collaborations. A creative highlight is “Oostenwind”, created with chef Syrco Bakker after he earned his second Michelin star in 2018. This coffee originates from the slopes of Gunung Batur in Bali. The project seamlessly connects Zeeland identity with Indonesian heritage. Attach Studio designed custom porcelain specifically for this coffee. Furthermore, the brand regularly experiments with ’specials’, such as a unique 2020 Stout in collaboration with brewery Dutch Bargain and the sale of Nomad’s Chai.
