More About KOVI Koffiebranders
KOVI Koffiebranders: Local Impact and Artisanal Quality
KOVI Koffiebranders started in 2021 in Velserbroek. Founder Joost Rutte launched the venture during the corona pandemic. During that period, the demand for high-quality coffee for remote workers continued to rise. Rutte therefore decided to professionally pursue the passion he had since his student days. Today, he proudly positions himself as “Meester Koffiebrander KOVI”. The company has since become a BV with formal impact statutes.
The venture is much more than just a bean roastery. KOVI focuses strongly on society as an official member of Social Enterprise NL and the Code Sociale Ondernemingen. This demonstrates that the social mission is deeply embedded within the organization.
Labor Participation as a Core Value
Creating employment opportunities is at the heart of the business model. KOVI aims to provide concrete help to people distanced from the labor market. This specifically applies to newcomers from coffee-producing countries. To achieve this, the company works very closely with partner IJmondWerkt.
The IJmondWerkt team handles essential parts of the production process. They pack the coffee, label the bags, and seal the packaging. They also carry out creative projects using used jute coffee sacks. Furthermore, the social impact has been made highly measurable: every 500 kilograms of coffee sold creates one full-time job for an employee.
Electric Roasting and Ethical Sourcing
Sustainability is another crucial pillar for the roastery. KOVI operates 100 percent electrically based on solar energy. The company roasts the beans in small batches to guarantee the highest quality. Each coffee is given a specific, slow roast profile, ensuring the unique flavors of the origin are best highlighted in the cup.
The sourcing of green beans is done ethically. Transparency and a fair trade chain are central to this vision. The webshop offers various sustainable origins, including Peru, Brazil, Honduras, Ethiopia, and Colombia.
Flavor Profiles and Selection
The selection offers a clear journey of discovery for the discerning coffee lover. The powerful ‘Booster Blend’ combines dark-roasted beans from Brazil, Honduras, and Vietnam. Additionally, the collection features striking single origins:
Peru Pichanaki: Washed coffee with notes of cocoa, brown sugar, and dried fruit.
Brasil Yellow Bourbon: A mild, sweet espresso with cocoa, hazelnut, and caramel.
Ethiopië Sidamo: A layered profile featuring exotic fruit and sweet chocolate.
Furthermore, the company offers the special ‘Waye of Life Blend’. This blend combines the smoothness of Latin American beans with bold Asian tones. Customers can explore these flavors through clever tasting kits, such as ‘Krachtig & Donker’ or ‘Zacht & Rond’. For loyal enthusiasts, flexible subscriptions are available. The online store now serves consumers across Nederland, België, and Duitsland.
Business Services
For the B2B market, KOVI offers a comprehensive and professional service package. The company focuses specifically on hospitality, offices, and retail. Hospitality clients receive intensive guidance from a dedicated quality team to find the perfect blend.
For office environments, the roastery supplies modern fully automatic machines. Two clear examples are the Dr. Coffee Office 10 and the advanced Office 11. Upon the installation of a coffee machine, KOVI always provides a short workshop, ensuring employees learn how to use the equipment optimally and correctly.
Knowledge Sharing via the KOVI Academy
Education is structured through the company’s own KOVI Academy in Haarlem. Consumers can participate in practical workshops here on a weekly basis. The Home Barista and Latte Art training sessions last two hours and are limited to six participants, guaranteeing plenty of personal attention for every student.
For business clients, these valuable training sessions are completely free. The professional education follows strict international standards and concludes with an official certificate. Even internationally recognized SCA certifications are among the extensive options. With this total offering, KOVI builds a responsible and high-quality coffee experience every day.
