More About Naked Espresso

Naked Espresso: from espresso bar to NAKED Amsterdam

Naked Espresso opened in 2017 in the former police station on Warmoesstraat in Amsterdam. At the time, the opening was described as the start of a planned chain. The founding team mentioned included Ad van Stek, his sons Jesper van Stek and Niels van Stek, and entrepreneur Bob Kleton.

Other reports dated the opening to June 2017 and linked the start to brothers Niels and Jesper van Stek, who had previously franchised several Doppio locations for several years. Further growth was documented in October 2018, with a second location opening on a corner near the Dam, followed by a third location on Rijnstraat.

The current public positioning differs from the early reports. The official website now presents the establishment as NAKED Amsterdam, a family-owned bistro at Dam 10. As such, the visible emphasis is not only on espresso, but also on food, wine, cocktails, brunch, dinner, and private gatherings.

Coffee, roasting, and equipment

Limited public information is available regarding the roasting process. Coffee Insurrection describes Naked Espresso as a specialty coffee bar that roasts its own beans. Details regarding the roaster, machine brand, batch size, roast profiles, green coffee quality control, and software used are not publicly documented.

However, there are product pages where roast goals are mentioned. Brazil Fazenda Jaguara and Colombia El Placer are designated as omni roast. Costa Rica-Hacienda Colima and Ethiopië Botto Village are listed as filter roast. Earlier reports from the start linked Naked Espresso with Stooker Roasting Company.

The bar equipment is partially documented. In 2020, a three-group Slayer Steam espresso machine was mentioned at Naked Espresso. This provides a concrete image of the bar setup at the time, but says nothing about the current technical configuration.

Documented Coffee Selection

The online offering on dam8.nl includes five products, consisting of four coffee products and one non-coffee product. The mentioned coffees are Brazil Fazenda Jaguara, Ethiopië Botto Village, Costa Rica-Hacienda Colima, and Colombia El Placer. No fixed blend line or subscription offer is publicly described on the current official site.

Brazil Fazenda Jaguara is listed as a 250-gram coffee. The product information mentions Yellow Catuai, a natural process, omni roast, and an origin from Campo das Vertentes or São João del Rei. The altitude is stated as 1100 meters above sea level.

Ethiopië Botto Village is also listed as 250 grams. The coffee is documented as Heirloom, Honey Process, and filter roast. It originates from Jimma, grown at an altitude between 1950 and 2000 meters above sea level.

Origin and Supply Chain Information

The publicly documented origins are Brazilië, Ethiopië, Costa Rica, and Colombia. For Brazil Fazenda Jaguara, Natalia Moreira, Andre Luiz Garcia, and Benicio are listed as the farmers. For Ethiopië Botto Village, Mohamed Ali, Jimma, and the aforementioned altitude are mentioned.

Costa Rica-Hacienda Colima lists Alejo Castro Kahler as the farmer, Central Valley as the region, and Marsellesa as the variety. The altitude there ranges between 1400 and 1500 meters. Colombia El Placer mentions Finca El Placer, Natibel Realpe Ortega, Nariño, and La Unión, along with an altitude of 1630 meters. The varieties are 50 percent Castillo and 50 percent Colombia.

The product pages therefore provide names of farms, farmers, regions, varieties, and processing methods. At the same time, direct trade contracts, price transparency, and payments to producers are not publicly described. Furthermore, certifications such as organic, Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, or B Corp are not publicly documented for the coffee line.

Sustainability and Business Operations

No measurable goals regarding waste policy, packaging materials, or CO2 reduction were found publicly in the provided material. The official site mentions organic and biodynamic wines, but that is not a coffee certification. The site also refers to local ingredients and family recipes for food, without publishing a measurable standard.

The picture regarding distribution is similarly limited. The current website focuses on the location at Dam 10, the menu, reservations, and contact information. The older dam8.nl shop shows coffee products under categories for coffee beans and Naked espresso. Wholesale, retail partners, supermarket availability, and subscriptions are not publicly documented.

Location, training, and events

The physical location is publicly listed as Dam 10, 1012 NL Amsterdam. The official site documents opening hours per day. The reservation information states that bookings are possible up to two days in advance for groups of up to eight people. For private gatherings, a capacity of up to 60 guests for the entire venue is mentioned. According to that information, the first floor offers a maximum of 20 seats.

In addition to the hospitality offering, training sessions are also mentioned. dam8.nl documents barista workshops at various levels, including “Become a Barista”, Refresher Course, and Master Barista. The “Become a Barista” workshop is described as two sessions of four hours each. For the Refresher Course, the page is internally inconsistent: one section mentions two hours, while another mentions two sessions of four hours.

Team and public recognition

At the start in 2017, Ad van Stek, Jesper van Stek, Niels van Stek, and Bob Kleton were mentioned. In 2020, Niels van Stek was identified as the owner. Coffee Insurrection describes the business as being run by Jesper and Niels van Stek. A current head roaster, green buyer, café manager, or operational leader is not publicly documented.

Jesper van Stek was mentioned in the coverage surrounding the opening as finishing fifth in the Dutch Barista Championships. In 2018, Naked Espresso was listed at position 23 in the Koffie Top 100. Subsequent public attention focused, among other things, on the bar equipment and the business’s position within the Amsterdam coffee scene.
