More About SCOFFEE
Scoffee: A Mission-Driven Coffee Roastery from Utrecht
In November 2020, owner Tarik Brummelaar launched the brand Scoffee. After carrying the idea for years and working on it in silence for months, the first orders were opened. The name is a thoughtful blend of the words ‘school’ and ‘coffee’. This Utrecht-based company combines the online sale of specialty coffee with a strong social mission. The brand has three clear primary goals: delivering the best coffee, paying farmers a fair price, and increasing access to education in producing countries.
Direct Trade in Guatemala
Scoffee currently focuses entirely on Guatemala. This country produces excellent coffee, but simultaneously struggles with poverty and a lack of quality education in rural areas. The brand sources beans directly from the farmers to guarantee quality and pay better prices. Although the website mentions two cooperatives, the coffee currently comes exclusively from the Lja’tz cooperative.
This group consists of sixty small-scale farmers from Kaqchikel-Tz’utujil Maya families. Approximately forty percent of these farmers are women. The plantations are located on the slopes of the Tolimán volcano near Lake Atitlán. Here, the coffee grows at an impressive altitude of 1,700 to 1,900 meters. Scoffee states that they pay these farmers at least twenty-five percent more than other buyers. Moreover, the farmers work almost organically and actively protect the local ecosystems.
Master Coffee: Flavor and Roast Profile
The roastery positions its product as ‘single-estate specialty coffee’. According to the company, the beans belong to the top one percent in the world. They select the beans together with an unnamed master roaster. Scoffee consciously avoids blends and opts for a light roast to preserve complex flavors. The permanent range is called Meesterkoffie and consists of two variants, plus a combined tasting pack:
Mild: An extra light roast with subtle, fruity notes. Perfect for filter coffee or for drinkers seeking a unique cup.
Streng: A slightly longer roast designed for daily use. Ideal for fully automatic and semi-automatic espresso machines.
This coffee achieves a high score of 85.5 on the SCA scale. The beans consist of Bourbon and Caturra varieties and are processed using the washed method. Drinkers can expect clear tasting notes of chocolate, hazelnut, fruit, and orange peel. The brew is characterized by a medium acidity and a full body.
Freshness, Distribution, and Sustainability
Production follows a strict and fresh weekly rhythm. Coffee is roasted in small batches on Monday. Tuesday is the designated shipping day, and customers receive their fresh beans on Wednesday. Most orders are conveniently sized to fit through the letterbox. Within the city of Utrecht, the company delivers packages by bicycle, free of charge wherever possible.
Customers can choose between a one-time purchase or a flexible subscription that can be canceled at any time. Deliveries occur every two or four weeks. Packaging sizes range from 250 grams to 700 grams. With this, Scoffee caters to single-person households, large families, and SMEs. Sustainability is also evident in the packaging; the brand uses FSC-certified boxes, CO2-neutral coffee bags, and sustainable printing from Groenprint.
Education as a Core Value
Scoffee’s social impact focuses on the Colegio Meso-Americano in Chimaltenango, Guatemala. Founded in 1998, this school provides education to five hundred children between the ages of 6 and 17. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on personal development, self-reliance, and leadership to break the cycle of poverty.
Scoffee donates four euros per kilo of coffee sold to a specific scholarship program. A full scholarship, including daily lunch, costs one hundred US dollars per month. By early 2021, the brand had already fully funded the school costs for two children. This initiative is part of a broader group of 24 students receiving scholarships at the school.
A Look to the Future
The ambitions of this online micro-webshop for the coming years are significant. The long-term vision for the year 2030 has been clearly defined by the founder. By that time, Scoffee aims to serve twenty thousand households and five hundred businesses monthly directly from its own roastery. With this projected growth, the company hopes to help 2,500 children annually across five different countries gain access to quality education.
