More About Screaming Beans Coffee Roasters
From espresso bar to roaster
Screaming Beans grew from an espresso bar in De 9 Straatjes into a city-wide roaster. The first bar opened in 2007, followed by a specialty bar in 2010. In 2014, they began roasting in-house to gain more control over the flavor profiles and to serve both retail and wholesale clients.
Runstraat 6 became the flagship location in 2018. Between 2021 and 2022, the brand underwent a repositioning and rebranding with Foster & Kin, who invested and became a partner. The founders come from the media and creative industries, placing a strong emphasis on brand storytelling and community.
Roast philosophy and approach
For selected single origins, the roaster employs an “omni-roast”, ensuring a single profile works for both espresso and filter. At the same time, the assortment often offers separate Espresso and Filter variants per product, indicating parallel profile development where it makes more sense.
Origin education is handled through a Coffee of the Month, providing details on processing, altitude, and the producer. Competitive pressure is part of the game, as seen in their participation in Roast Masters 2025 with a 90-minute mystery roast. Details regarding machinery, software, or capacity are not shared publicly.
Flavor profiles, blends, and singles
The Whisper Blend is the signature espresso blend. The composition consists of 70 percent Ethiopia from two different regions and 30 percent Colombia, Cauca. The Colombian component provides chocolate notes, while the Ethiopian component adds clarity and brightness, creating a balanced cup both as a pure espresso and in milk drinks.
The Ethiopian origin includes the Mokonisa Primary Cooperative in Sidama, founded in 1975, with approximately 1,492 farmers at around 1,750 meters, as well as Shakisso lots. As an omniroast, Ethiopia Guji “Suke Quto” frequently appears, naturally processed, featuring Kurume and Welicho varieties, grown at 1,800 to 2,200 meters.
The decaf offering is anchored by Altura Mexico Decaf from La Victoria Farm, washed process, Bourbon and Caturra varieties, grown around 1,750 meters. Previous single-origin espresso at Amstelstraat included Honduras “Ocotepeque”, naturally processed, as reported by independent reviewers in 2023.
Sourcing and Transparency
Product pages and blogs consistently mention the farm or cooperative, processing method, varieties, and altitude. The communication emphasizes fair-traded specialty coffee, promising a fair price and openness toward stakeholders. However, a formal annual transparency report or publication of FOB prices is currently unavailable.

The calendar includes creative events, including ADE 2025 “Screaming Beans x Honey Honey” at Utrechtsestraat 75. Job openings, such as Head of Coffee and barista, indicate further growth.
