More About Tuka Coffee Roasters
TUKA Coffee Roasters, short chains with Nijmegen roots
TUKA Coffee Roasters grew out of an internship in Costa Rica completed by co-founders Miles Bühlmann and Ben Flikweert. They studied International Food & Agribusiness and began importing sustainably grown coffee during the COVID-19 period. The activities fall under 2CanTrades B.V., founded on 11-11-2020, KVK 90228413. From the start, the brand built its audience at the Saturday market in Nijmegen, where they can still be found every week. The mission focuses on short, transparent chains and creating a connection between farmers and the local community in Nijmegen.
Roasting philosophy and technology
TUKA roasts in Nijmegen on a 12 kg Probat and consciously chooses small batch production. This choice supports freshness and traceability per batch. The Probat setup was established with Stichting Coffyn, linking craftsmanship with social impact. Sourcing is done through direct relationships with small-scale farms, ensuring short and clear chains. The promise “freshly roasted in Nijmegen” strengthens the local identity and proximity to customers.
Assortment, blends, and single origins
The assortment combines accessible blends with origin-driven single origins. Flavor profiles are clearly communicated and are suitable for both espresso and filter use.
“FOREST BLEND, Medium Roast”, chocolate, nutmeg, caramel, origin Honduras, Bolivia, Colombia, Caturra and Catuai, washed.
“COME BACK TO EARTH, Dark Roast”, 1 kg espresso blend in the core range.
“SELF CARE, Medium Roast”, 1 kg blend for an accessible, everyday espresso.
“Colombia LAS SELVAS, Medium Roast”, brown spice, caramel, white tea, Tatamá region, Castillo and Caturro, washed.
“Colombia TORRA, Espresso Roast”, caramel, milk chocolate, lemon, Torre region, Castillo and Caturra, washed, cupping score 86.
Origin and Sourcing Model
The sourcing model is based on direct trade and originated in Costa Rica. The network later expanded to Honduras and Colombia to match growing volumes and impact. Communication with producers is frequent and personal, described as daily consultations with farm partners. Current components include Tarrazú in Costa Rica, Tatamá and Torre in Colombia, and origins in Honduras and Bolivia. Product information specifies Arabica varieties, such as Catuai, Caturra, and Castillo, and the use of the washed processing method.
Scale and Growth
Production centers around a 12 kg Probat, ideal for specialty profiles in small batches. An interview reports approximately 180,000 kg in 2025, which accounts for about 1.8 million cups at roughly 10 grams per cup. Regional reports from October 2024 mentioned 100,000 kg up to that point and a network of about 1,400 farmers across Costa Rica, Honduras, and Colombia. The import arm supplied European roasters and utilized trade fairs such as World of Coffee to increase B2B volumes.
Team and Visibility
Miles Bühlmann and Ben Flikweert are the co-founders and public faces of the brand. Francesco Pedeferri is also listed as a co-founder in his professional bio and is visible in team-oriented media. Miles regularly represents the brand in interviews and podcasts focusing on growth and impact.
Retail, Location, and Education
The roastery is located at Cargadoorweg 17, 6541 BT Nijmegen and is open for visits by appointment. Every week, TUKA is present at the Saturday market at Kelfkensbos in Nijmegen, from 08:00 to 15:00. Additionally, coffee workshops are part of the brand’s educational offering, with sessions held at Kerkenbos 1058. Local hospitality businesses are served, including deliveries to Frowijn in Nijmegen.
Wholesale and Services for Hospitality and Offices
TUKA offers programs for the hospitality sector including beans, equipment, and grinders, complemented by free annual barista training for partner teams. For offices, there are customized programs featuring equipment, consumables, and partner-driven service and maintenance. Wholesale is relationship-driven and often begins with a tasting, either on-site at TUKA or at the client’s location.
Community, Sustainability, and Social Impact
The partnership with Stichting Coffyn, affiliated with Pluryn, provides supported employment opportunities, with Coffyn employees handling tasks such as packaging and labeling. The Saturday market serves as a consistent touchpoint with the community, emphasizing local roots. The brand message highlights polyculture-friendly sourcing and sustainable agriculture, rooted in its origins in Costa Rica.
Media and Recognition
TUKA was featured in a profile and interview titled “TUKA Coffee Roasters, flavorful connections between farmer and neighborhood“ on October 29, 2024. In October 2025, an interview appeared on the “024/7“ podcast, offering insights into volumes, expansion, and strategy. In 2024, the brand was nominated for the Nijmegen Impact Awards and appeared in local mentions and blog pieces, including Indebuurt Nijmegen and a cultural article by ANS-Online about the Saturday market.
What this means for coffee makers in the Netherlands
The combination of short supply chains, small-batch production, and social impact makes TUKA highly relevant for bars and roasters who value transparency and provenance. Clear flavor profiles and consistent communication per origin assist in menu development and the guest experience. Their proven scale and producer network ensure supply security within a specialty framework. Finally, their training offerings support quality in the cup, from the bar to the office environment.
