More About VanRoast Coffee Roasters

From Mobile Roastery to Historic Building
The history of VanRoast Coffee Roasters begins in 2018. Founder Maurice de Jong launched Keikoffie at the time, the first mobile coffee roastery in the Netherlands. He previously worked at a bank and was dissatisfied with the standard office coffee. This frustration, combined with a trip to Thailand where he picked coffee cherries, inspired him to dive professionally into the world of coffee.
In its early years, the company operated out of a van equipped with an old 600kg Italian roaster. Following a move to Bunschoten-Spakenburg and a sabbatical in 2022, the business evolved and relocated to the north of the country. After an extensive renovation, 2025 marks the official launch of VanRoast Coffee Roasters in Warffum, Groningen.
Fully Electric and Fossil-Free Roasting
Sustainability is the absolute core of the current business philosophy. VanRoast utilizes electric roasters powered by self-generated solar energy. The company states that this method, partly through the use of infrared radiation, ensures a more consistent and cleaner result in the cup.
A striking technical detail is the advanced air purification system. This two-stage system combines electrostatic filters with carbon filters, making traditional gas burners or afterburners completely redundant. This offers the following concrete benefits for production and the surrounding historical environment:

There is absolutely no smoke nuisance for the neighborhood.
The filtration system prevents bothersome odors during the roasting process.
CO2 emissions are significantly reduced by avoiding gas combustion.

Following the roasting process, a professional destoner removes all small impurities, such as pebbles and twigs. The roastery roasts fresh beans in small batches several days a week. The introduction of a brand-new infrared roaster is planned for 2027.
Accessible Specialty Coffee and Flavor Profiles
The assortment focuses primarily on the accessible specialty market. The webshop currently offers seventeen products, including various blends, single origins, teas, and decaffeinated options. VanRoast is transparent about international SCA scores, which for various coffees range between 82 and 82.25 points.
The company offers several recognizable and permanent blends. The Special Crema has been a classic espresso from Peru and India for seven years, featuring notes of chocolate, caramel, and hazelnut. The Special Aroma is a balanced blend from Colombia and Uganda with fresh citrus, red fruits, and nuts. The flagship, the Prestigio blend, combines beans from Uganda, Brazil, and India for a rich flavor with dark chocolate and light spices.
Additionally, the brand offers specific single origin coffees with clear origin information and plant varieties. The Peru Classico contains the Typica, Caturra, and Catimor varieties. The Costa Rica Tarrazú comes from the Coope Tarrazú cooperative, which represents over five thousand small farmers. The Brazil Cerrado Mineiro is an unwashed Arabica grown at altitudes up to 1,300 meters.
Experience and Hospitality in Groningen
The physical location in Warffum was chosen deliberately and forms an important part of the brand story. The historic building previously served as a printing press, a haberdashery, and a hat shop. The preserved Art Deco interior gives the production space an authentic character. The building functions not just as a workshop, but as a visible extension of the brand identity.
VanRoast is strongly committed to local hospitality and experience. The roastery features a fifty-square-meter event space, suitable for groups of up to thirty people. In 2026, the company will further expand this branch with the opening of B&B Het Ambachtshuis Warffum. Guests will then sleep literally next to the coffee roastery in one of the three planned rooms.
Customers can order freshly roasted coffee through the online webshop or pick it up directly in Warffum. The company ensures a fast delivery time of one to three business days. To guarantee optimal quality, the roastery strongly advises customers to consume the coffee beans within three months of the roast date.
