About Mister Nata – Berenstraat

Mister Nata on Berenstraat: Portuguese patisserie and coffee in Amsterdam

Mister Nata has had a branch at Berenstraat 4 in Amsterdam since 2025. The shop is located in De 9 Straatjes and represents the company’s fourth location in the city. The opening of this branch was announced on August 4, 2025. In early September, the company invited visitors to the new address via social media. An exact opening date has not been publicly documented.

Origins and Concept

Behind Mister Nata is José Cruz, who, according to the company, was born and raised in Portugal. A 2022 profile lists Lisbon as his birthplace. Cruz moved to the Netherlands in 2000 and focused on gastronomy and Portuguese food culture.

In 2016, he introduced the NATA Lisboa franchise in Amsterdam. He operated this format until 2020. Around 2020 or 2021, he subsequently launched Mister Nata. The company focuses on Portuguese patisserie, with the pastel de nata as the central product. In its own description, Mister Nata uses the term “Sun of Lisbon” for this concept.

According to the company, the products come directly from Portugal. Mister Nata works with selected Portuguese bakeries. The names of these bakeries have not been made public. As a result, it is not possible to determine based on the available information exactly where the individual products are prepared.

Coffee and Brewing

Little separate information is available regarding the coffee offering at the Berenstraat location. For another Amsterdam branch, located on Van Woustraat, Single Estate Coffee Roasters is named as the supplier. There, the coffee is prepared using a La Marzocco espresso machine. It has not been publicly confirmed that the Berenstraat branch uses the same supplier and equipment.

At the Van Woustraat location, espresso, cappuccino, and latte appear on public menu lists. No separate drink menu has been found for the Berenstraat branch. Furthermore, filter coffee, batch brew, pour-over, AeroPress, and other manual brewing methods have not been specifically documented for this location. The available data therefore primarily points to an offering centered around espresso, but does not allow for a definitive conclusion about the full menu.

Pastéis de nata and variations

In addition to the classic pastel de nata, Mister Nata lists several variations. The range includes versions with apple and cinnamon, blackberry, chocolate, and raspberry. A vegan version has also been documented. Not all public product information clearly indicates which flavors are available at each location at any given time.

The combination of coffee and Portuguese custard tarts forms the core of the concept. This means the focus is not solely on specialty coffee. The coffee supports a broader patisserie concept centered on Portuguese products.

Events and Local Activities

No workshops, tastings, exhibitions, or other events have been publicly documented for the Berenstraat location. There is also no known recurring neighborhood program or local partnership.

At the company level, Mister Nata does organize activities. So-called coffee raves took place at the Haarlemmerdijk location, combining DJs, coffee, and pastéis de nata. A second edition was scheduled for January 31, 2026. Additionally, the company announced its participation in the Amsterdam Coffee Festival 2026. These activities are not specifically linked to the Berenstraat location.

Sustainability and origin

Mister Nata has not published any public environmental certification, waste policy, energy policy, or labor-related sustainability plan. No separate agreements regarding packaging or waste processing have been documented for the Berenstraat location either.

Single Estate states at the supplier level that 82 percent of its coffee is purchased through its own definition of direct trade. This involves the roaster paying producers directly and visiting them at least once a year. The roader also claims to pay at least one and a half times the world market price for coffee. These statements apply to the supplier and cannot be automatically attributed to Mister Nata or the Berenstraat location.

The supplier claims to use aluminum-free, recyclable coffee packaging and compostable plant-based capsules. Residual material from the roasting process is sent to Haagse Zwam for mushroom cultivation. These practices have not been confirmed as policy for the Amsterdam location.

Publicity and Positioning

Mister Nata has appeared in various Amsterdam overviews of coffee and patisserie shops. Most mentions refer to the company as a whole or to the Van Woustraat location. No independent award or distinction has been documented for the Berenstraat location. As a result, public information primarily provides insight into the concept and company-wide activities, while details about the coffee program of this specific location remain limited.
