BLEND Bloemhof

BLEND Bloemhof has been located at Lange Hilleweg 220A in Rotterdam-Zuid since March 2021. The venue is situated in the Bloemhof neighborhood, part of Feijenoord. Founders Carolien and Hans Euser moved from Veenendaal to Rotterdam in 2017. A year later, the idea for a neighborhood-focused meeting place at this address was born.

The founders’ background lies outside the hospitality industry. Hans studied theology and worked at a Bible school. Carolien worked in healthcare. They were subsequently active as a pastoral couple and became involved in a network of intercultural church communities.

BLEND combines three functions under one roof: an espresso bar, a hair salon, and a shop with second-hand clothing. The organization describes the building as a living room for the neighborhood. The goal is to facilitate contact between residents with different religious, ethnic, political, and economic backgrounds.

The enterprise is registered as Stichting BLEND Bloemhof. It presents itself as a social enterprise without a profit motive. The work model consists of commercial services, social support, and activities centered on meaning-making. BLEND summarizes this as “business, care, and meaning”.

Coffee is just one part of the broader neighborhood concept. Zwarte Koffie lists BLEND as a hospitality client. According to BLEND, the coffee used comes from Costa Rica and is purchased directly from a coffee farmer. The webshop offers whole beans, ground coffee, and caffeine-free variants.

The hospitality space primarily functions as an espresso bar. Additionally, iced coffee and other hot and cold drinks are mentioned. Coffee and milkshakes are also available for takeaway. Information about filter methods such as V60, Chemex, AeroPress, or batch brew is not publicly documented.

There is uncertainty regarding the roasting location. One page of BLEND states that the beans are roasted in Ede, while elsewhere Rotterdam is mentioned. Supplier Zwarte Koffie lists Ede as the place of roasting. Therefore, based on the available information, no definitive conclusion can be drawn.

BLEND links coffee sales to social activities. For example, there is a scheme for “Deferred Coffee”. In this, a customer pays in advance for a cup of coffee for another neighborhood resident. The initiative aligns with the broader function of the location as a place for meeting and support.

The organization facilitates meals, spoken-word evenings, and discussion groups. Alpha gatherings with meals also took place. During “Pitch Your Talent”, participants were given space for music, spoken word, or other work.

In addition, BLEND participated in cleaning actions in the neighborhood. In an action with Serve the City Rotterdam, the location served as a meeting point. During that activity, coffee and flowers were also distributed to residents. Other involved parties were Maranathakerk, Licht op Zuid, and Pastoraat Oude Wijken Rotterdam Zuid.

The social role is not limited to coffee. Through organizations such as the Centrum voor Dienstverlening and the Voedselbank, vouchers for free haircuts were distributed. The second-hand clothing shop mainly resells donated clothing. In this way, BLEND connects service provision to reuse.

Outside regular opening hours, the space can be rented for meetings, parties, and group meals. According to its own information, there is space for approximately 35 people. The location can provide a high tea, a simple lunch, or a coffee table.

BLEND states that the Costa Rican coffee is purchased directly from the farmer and roasted specifically for the organization. Zwarte Koffie describes its procurement as fully direct trade, with directly agreed-upon prices and traceable coffee. A specific farm or coffee producer in Costa Rica is not named by BLEND.

Little measurable data has been published regarding the environmental impact of the coffee. Zwarte Koffie states that it roasts circularly in Ede. No concrete figures are available for energy use, packaging, transport, or emissions at BLEND itself. The second-hand clothing sale does, however, form a visible part of the reuse within the building.

The combination of coffee, personal care, second-hand clothing, and neighborhood work received attention in local media from the opening. OPEN Rotterdam reported on the concept and its function as a meeting place in March and April 2021. De Havenloods published a profile on the fifth anniversary on May 26, 2026.

For the launch, the project received a budget of 80,000 euros from CityLab010, an initiative of the Municipality of Rotterdam, in 2020. On May 30, 2026, BLEND celebrated its fifth anniversary with live music and face painting for children. Coffee prices or mentions in industry-specific rankings are not publicly documented.
