More About Blue's
The Growth of a Micro-Roastery on the Veluwe
Blue’s began in 2018 as a passion project by founders Michiel and Marike. They started with a small one-kilo roaster in a blue shed. This shed was located in Ugchelen, on the edge of the Veluwe. The name Blue’s refers to this shed, but also to blues music and Blue Mountain coffee. Demand for their coffee grew rapidly, reaching far beyond the local community. In 2020, the company installed a Probat shop roaster with a capacity of twenty kilos per hour. Since 2025, Blue’s has been using a larger Probat P12 roaster, allowing them to produce fifty kilos per hour. Blue’s consciously operates outside the major cities, positioning itself as an accessible, rural micro-roastery.
Artisanal Roasting and Quality
The roasting philosophy of Blue’s relies heavily on an artisanal and sensory approach. Founder Michiel is an SCA-certified coffee roaster. The company roasts several times a week to guarantee maximum freshness, meaning customers often receive their freshly roasted orders the very next day. Blue’s focuses exclusively on 100% arabica beans within the specialty segment. The company does not share digital roast profiles or formal quality control data via systems like Cropster. Instead, quality is evidenced by the high SCA scores of the coffees, which range between 86.0 and 88.0 points on the website. This serves as a strong mark of quality for an independent Dutch roastery.
Direct Trade and Transparent Relationships
Blue’s often sources green beans through direct trade relationships. The company works closely with importers who prioritize the farmer. In February 2024, the founders visited Costa Rica to strengthen these ties, visiting Shefa Exclusive Coffees and Don Alexis, among others. For the Costa Rica Los Campos coffee, they work with Annelise Scholl of Grounds; these beans come from the Ramirez-Navarro family in Tablon del Guarco. For the Colombia Clementine Glow, Blue’s collaborates with Joram Bennekers of Origin Bridge, sourced from the El Caney farm managed by Natalia Zuluaga. The Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Kebede Wako is sourced via Trabocca’s Operation Cherry Red model. Blue’s emphasizes fair pricing and direct trade, although they lack their own transparency report. However, Blue’s partners often share their financial models openly with the public.
The Assortment: From House Blends to Single Origins
Blue’s offering consists of two permanent house blends and various single origins.
Blue’s Black Label: A powerful espresso featuring beans from Brazil, Ethiopia, and India. The flavor is round, offering notes of caramel, nuts, and a spicy finish. This blend is also highly suitable for milk-based coffees.
Blue’s White Label: A milder everyday coffee, developed in collaboration with regular customers. This blend features beans from Costa Rica, Brazil, and India, with notes of stone fruit, caramel, and nuts.
Additionally, the roastery offers detailed single origins. The Colombia Clementine Glow is a washed Bourbon Papayo with a high score of 88 SCA points. The Costa Rica Los Campos undergoes a ’black honey’ process and dries in the sun for 25 days. The Brazil Fazenda Lagoa comes from Minas Gerais, where cousins Marcelo and Adolfo produce six thousand bags annually. This unwashed coffee delivers flavors of marmalade, roasted nuts, and dark chocolate. For decaf lovers, there is the Colombia Huila. This bean is 99.9 percent decaffeinated using sugarcane and offers complex notes of red fruit, vanilla, and butterscotch.
Business Market and Local Experience
Blue’s supplies consumers, the hospitality sector, companies, and sports clubs throughout the Netherlands. For the business market, the company also offers equipment, such as the Etna Dorado Espresso Premium. The webshop also sells accessories like timers and scales, as well as cleaning supplies. For events and weddings, Blue’s has a mobile service called ’Blue’s op locatie’. A barista serves fresh coffee from a Piaggio tuk-tuk. Blue’s does not have a traditional espresso bar or a large network of cafés. The roastery on the Hoenderloseweg takes a low-threshold approach for visitors. The rule is simple: if the door is open, they are open. For local customers within five kilometers and in Beekbergen, Blue’s also offers a special delivery service. Orders via PostNL are handled through the webshop, which is accessible 24 hours a day.
