More About Costa Rica
Origin and farm
This single-origin coffee comes from the Los Santos region of Costa Rica, renowned for quality coffee. The beans grow on the small-scale farm Los Campos owned by the family of Don Alexis Ramirez. In 2015 Alexis built his own processing station there so he could process the beans himself and safeguard their quality. The plantation sits at about 1,750 metres altitude, which contributes to the coffee’s layered flavour. After his passing, his children continued his quality-driven work.
Roast profile
Sampietro artisanally roasts this Costa Rica in Den Bosch to a medium roast. That results in an accessible, balanced flavour without dominant acidity. The roastery is known for coffee with character and a rounded, full taste, free of bitter off-notes. The medium roast brings out the bean’s natural sweetness and nuances beautifully. Each batch is roasted fresh and packaged immediately to preserve the flavour at its peak.
Flavor and aroma
The flavour palette is rich. Expect notes of stone fruit (such as peach or apricot) and nuts (walnut), supported by soft cocoa. The aroma even carries a hint of Earl Grey tea, adding an elegant floral touch. The coffee tastes sweet and mild, with low acidity and therefore no sharp edges. The body is medium-full and the finish is sweet and lingering.
Processing Method
The beans undergo a unique 'washed anaerobic' process. First, the coffee cherries ferment anaerobically (without oxygen) in sealed tanks, which develops extra sweet, fruity flavours. The fermented beans are then washed to remove the pulp, as in a classic washed coffee. This combination of fermentation and washing yields a clean, bright-tasting coffee with complex nuances. You taste the pure character of the bean, complemented by subtle notes from the fermentation.
Species and variety
This coffee is 100% Arabica of the Catuai variety, a popular cultivar in Central America. Catuai was developed from a cross between Caturra and Mundo Novo and is known for its high yield and balanced flavour profile. The variety produces beans with plenty of sweetness and a gentle acidity, qualities that are easy to taste in the cup.
Sustainability and ethics
Thanks to direct trade without intermediaries the Ramirez family receives a fair price and the origin remains transparent. With their own micro-processing station the farm also has plenty of control and can keep investing in quality. They are focused on the long term as well, experimenting with new varieties (disease-resistant F1 hybrids, Geisha) to cope better with climate change and plant diseases.
Brewing Recommendations
Manual brew methods such as a V60 or Chemex bring out the delicate fruit and tea aromas best. Grind the beans medium and use water at about 92 °C in a ratio of roughly 1:16 for an optimal, balanced extraction. A cafetière (French press) also brews a delicious cup with a full body. Thanks to the low acidity this coffee tastes soft and pleasant even when enjoyed black (without additives).
Prices and reviews
This coffee enjoys an excellent reputation among enthusiasts even though it has not yet won an official award. Los Santos regularly produces Cup of Excellence winners, an indication of the high quality level of this origin. The fact that this microlot has been purchased and roasted by various specialty roasters worldwide further confirms its quality. In cuppings it would be expected to score high, well above 85 points on the 100 point scale, thanks to its complex, clean flavour. Even without a gold medal on the bag it is a crowd favourite in terms of taste.
Packaging and design
The freshly roasted beans are packed in a resealable bag with a valve, so the aroma is preserved. The design is practical and tidy, the label clearly shows the Sampietro logo and the origin ("Costa Rica"). The roast date and a short flavour description are usually printed on the bag as well. The standard package holds 250 g, ideal for home use, and anyone who needs more can buy a larger bag of 1 kg.
Availability and price
This single origin is available while stocks last through the Sampietro webshop and at the roastery in Den Bosch. A 250 gram bag costs € 12.95, comparable to other specialty coffees of this quality. Sampietro also offers a kilo pack for about € 39.95. Because of the labour-intensive processing and direct trade the price is well justified for both farmer and coffee drinker.
