More About Wasven

Wasven as a social coffee roastery

Wasven operates its coffee roastery as part of a broader social enterprise in Eindhoven. The organization originated from the neighborhood initiative “De beuk erin”, which began in 1998. This initiative focused on preserving a local beech avenue and the surrounding biodiversity. Alfred van Kempen is considered a co-founder and co-initiator. In May 2024, the organization celebrated its 25th anniversary.

In 2007, Wasven purchased the historic Wasven farm at Celebeslaan 30 in Eindhoven. That same year, the registered care farm also began operations. The coffee roastery took shape later. Former TU Eindhoven professor Cees Midden started its development after his retirement in 2014. A separate official opening date for the roastery has not been publicly recorded.

Roasting, packaging, and working on-site

Volunteers roast the coffee by hand weekly on the mezzanine of the farm. During the process, the temperature of the green beans rises gradually. This allows moisture to evaporate first, after which the roasting continues. A 2019 profile described this method as slow and controlled. Data regarding the brand of the roaster, the machine type, batch size, and annual volume have not been published.

The coffee is packaged on the same day by participants in the day activities. The roast date is printed on the packaging. According to Wasven, the roasting is done using green gas. The roasting and packaging work is part of a program where professionals, volunteers, and people with intellectual disabilities collaborate.

Assortment and Origin

The current lineup includes Guatemala Espresso, Ethiopië Espresso, Mexico Espresso, and a House Blend. The Guatemala Espresso originates from the Mataquescuintla region. The beans are sourced from members of Cooperativa Agricola Integral Las Brisas, a cooperative that has been in operation since 1967.

The Ethiopian coffee comes from the Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union. This coffee is listed for both espresso and filter brewing. The Mexico Espresso is sourced from high-altitude coffee plantations in Mexico. The House Blend combines beans from Guatemala and Colombia. Thus, Guatemala, Colombia, Ethiopia, and Mexico are the publicly documented countries of origin.

Wasven uses Arabica beans and sells coffee for espresso and drip filter. The organization states that green beans are purchased directly, fairly, and organically from small coffee farmers. The names of importers, exporters, or logistical intermediaries are not disclosed. Information regarding individual farms, producers, and specific harvest lots is largely not publicly available.

Sustainability and Certification

The coffee is organic and SKAL-certified. Additionally, Wasven notes that the roastery uses green gas. The broader organization holds a Gold Green Key designation. The Gasterij received a combined EKO and Green Key audit label on November 28, 2019. This label pertains to the hospitality activities and not to a specific coffee lot.

No public data is available regarding the reuse of coffee grounds, the recyclability of packaging, water consumption, or emissions per kilogram. A specific waste management policy for coffee production is also not described.

Sales, hospitality, and public activities

The coffee is available at their own shop on Celebeslaan. This shop is open from Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:00 to 16:00. Wasven also supplies restaurants, lunch rooms, and several regional stores. A current list of sales points is not available. Local delivery is done by cargo bike or by a vehicle running on green gas.

The Gasterij is located at the same site, open from Tuesday through Sunday between 10:00 and 17:00. There, their own roasted organic coffee is served. Visitors can watch the roasting process on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Cuppings and coffee workshops are available by appointment. A separate, permanently staffed tasting room is not documented.

Team, workshops, and public recognition

Cees Midden developed and led the roastery as a volunteer specialist from September 2014 to February 2023. In 2023, barista and pastry chef Karlijn gave workshops on origin, roasting, cupping, and latte art. In June 2026, Wasven was seeking a volunteer coffee roaster for four to eight hours per week. The current head roaster and green coffee buyer are not publicly known.

Coffee-specific competition awards are not documented. In 2016, Wasven received the title “Green Company of the Month” from the province of Noord-Brabant. This recognition pertained to the organization as a whole and was not an award for coffee quality.
