More over Escamp

Escamp: coffee as a social engine in Den Haag Zuidwest

Escamp doesn’t have a classic coffee story filled with famous cafés, literary circles, or a strong roasting tradition. The coffee culture of this district springs from a different source. It grows out of post-war reconstruction neighborhoods, shopping streets, public buildings, bakeries, and community hubs where coffee primarily serves as a catalyst for connection.

The profile from May 4, 2026, reveals a large, residential, and diverse district. In 2026, Escamp has 132,579 inhabitants, making it one of the largest potential coffee markets in Den Haag. Yet, the availability of distinct specialty coffee remains limited.

Post-war reconstruction, shops, and daily routines

The foundation of Escamp lies in neighborhoods such as Moerwijk, Morgenstond, Leyenburg, Bouwlust/Vrederust, Rustenburg-Oostbroek, Wateringse Veld, and Zuiderpark. Moerwijk is the oldest part of Den Haag Zuidwest, with the first homes dating back to 1933. Morgenstond primarily emerged between 1950 and 1958.

The urban planning of W.M. Dudok played a clear role. His expansion plans for Moerwijk and Morgenstond from 1947 to 1949 favored clean roads, residential blocks, and green spaces. As a result, local shopping and service points emerged rather than the dense café streets found in a city center.

The Leyweg therefore forms a logical axis for everyday coffee. Around Winkelcentrum Leyweg, the Tuesday market, and the lunch rush, coffee is about errands, breaks, sandwiches, and quick encounters. This makes the coffee culture practical, accessible, and deeply connected to the neighborhood.

Key addresses in the current scene

Escamp does not yet have a dense network of third-wave coffee bars. However, there is one clear new player: SevenHouse at Heeswijkplein 86–87 in Moerwijk. This spot started as a Ramadan pop-up and grew into a permanent neighborhood fixture.

SevenHouse combines coffee with matcha, homemade iced tea, croffles, cruffins, matcha cake, cookies, and milk cakes. The shop attracts mothers with children, laptop workers, locals, and visitors seeking coffee and conversation later in the day. It often remains open until 11:00 PM or midnight.

Other addresses serve a more everyday function. Café ZUID57 near Theater Dakota on the Zuidlarenstraat is a cultural meeting point in Morgenstond. Petit France at Leyweg 707 T focuses on croissants, filled baguettes, lunch, and coffee made from Arabica beans. Bakker Tim at Leyweg 597 combines bread, rolls, a terrace, wifi, and coffee.

The espresso bar in HagaZiekenhuis on the Leyweg also counts. Located in the renovated main hall, it serves as a welcoming storefront for the restaurant, catering to visitors and staff. The strength here lies not in the curated experience, but in volume, routine, and accessibility.

Coffee as community care and connection

In Escamp, the social role of coffee outweighs the focus on taste expertise. Coffee serves as a gateway for residents to step inside, start a conversation, and establish a steady routine, as evidenced by local community hubs and recurring morning gatherings.

  • At Betje, located at Betje Wolffstraat 181, coffee, tea, conversation, and activities are provided for the people of Moerwijk.
  • Haags Ontmoeten Waterhof organizes free coffee mornings for seniors and caregivers on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
  • Haags Ontmoeten Hoge Veld hosts coffee mornings every Monday and Tuesday, with news and conversation as the core focus.
  • Kids & Koffie in Morgenstond and the Leyweg area provides parents with children aged 0 to 4 a space to share their experiences.

These examples reveal a clear pattern. In Escamp, coffee often acts as an accessible vehicle for well-being, elderly care, family connection, and community bonding. For entrepreneurs, this is a significant signal.

What the local taste tells us

Demand in Escamp comes from several groups simultaneously: families, seniors, caregivers, shoppers, students, hospital visitors, and new households. Because of this, a narrow premium concept is less intuitive here than it would be on a city-center specialty street.

The most successful formulas are broad and practical. Think espresso, cappuccino, iced drinks, matcha, sweet pastries, lunch, sandwiches, take-away, wifi, and seating for families. Affordability and familiarity seem just as important as origin information or brewing methods.

At the same time, SevenHouse demonstrates that there is room for a younger demographic. Instagrammable sweets, a non-alcoholic evening culture, laptop-friendly spaces, and extended opening hours align well with a new urban need in Den Haag Zuidwest.

Sustainability: primarily local and practical

Coffee-specific sustainability is not yet strongly visible in Escamp. No district-wide reusable cup scheme was found, no local micro-roaster with published direct-trade sourcing, and no known coffee-ground recycling projects originating from the cafés.

Yet, a sustainable foundation does exist. SevenHouse is linked to Haagse Schatten, which encourages local spending. In that same spirit, a sustainable to-go cup made from recycled coffee cups fits right in. Additionally, Repareer Café Enzo Wateringse Veld shows that reuse and repair align perfectly with the social character of the neighborhood.

Market opportunity: quality with a community function

The main conclusion is clear. Escamp is underdeveloped as a specialty market, but strong as a coffee neighborhood with a social function. The opportunity lies not in copying the city center, but in creating its own unique model.

A promising café in Escamp combines high-quality coffee with accessible pricing, lunch, matcha, pastries, take-away, wifi, kid-friendly seating, evening hours, and community programming. Locations around Heeswijkplein, Leyweg, Wateringse Veld, and the HagaZiekenhuis/Leyweg zone deserve extra attention.

The missing puzzle piece is a dedicated Escamp micro-roaster or a serious filter coffee destination. Until then, the core of the story remains broader and more human: coffee as a means of care, connection, and neighborhood renewal.
