More About De Zeeuwse Sommelier
The Growth of De Zeeuwse Sommelier
De Zeeuwse Sommelier is a digital initiative by Cor van Hilst and Michiel Hautvast. Together, they combine over twenty-five years of experience in the coffee and tea world. The original parent company, Van Hilst Koffie en Thee, opened its doors in Nijmegen in 1999. Hautvast joined as co-owner in 2001. After nearly twenty years, the physical store closed to focus entirely on e-commerce. Since 2018, the brand has operated successfully from Oostkapelle in Zeeland.
Today, the company profiles itself as the largest coffee and tea webshop in Zeeland. The platform serves consumers and business customers in Nederland, België, Duitsland, and Luxemburg. Both founders bring a striking background to the coffee industry. Van Hilst previously worked as the director of a crisis shelter and now manages purchasing and order processing. Hautvast studied piano at the conservatory; he manages the technical infrastructure and is also a certified tea sommelier.
Branding Philosophy and Assortment
The public collection features over twenty types of coffee beans and more than two hundred varieties of tea. The company places a strong emphasis on Specialty Coffee, quality, and sustainability. The beans are artisanally roasted two to three times a week. This process is CO2-neutral, with emissions offset through sustainable forestry programs’s.
Signature Melanges
The webshop offers several unique melanges, tailored to specific brewing methods. Some of the key profiles include:
Espresso – Zeeuws Donker: A 100% Arabica roast in Milanese style with a long, full-bodied finish.
Espresso – Zeeuws Licht: A softer, more accessible blend for a light cup of coffee with a gentle body.
Zeeuwse Melange: A combination of Arabica and Robusta with a strong local character, designed for filter coffee and automatic machines.
Espresso – Zeeuws Pittig: A dark roast with a bold bite and spicy notes.
Direct Trade and Responsible Sourcing
De Zeeuwse Sommelier is increasingly sourcing directly from the farmers under their own “Farmers Direct” label. The goal for the 2025-2026 period is to source all espresso blends directly from the plantations. The Single Estate Colombia is a concrete example of this approach. This coffee comes from the Cascade de Bordones cooperative in the Huila region, where forty families work on farms averaging 2.5 hectares. The beans score high, reaching 83 to 85 points on the SCA quality scale.
Other origines also tell a detailed story. The Single Estate Guatemala is organically grown on a small farm in Huehuetenango. The Peruvian variety is sourced directly from the Los Mellizos cooperative. Additionally, there is the Thailand Bright Berry, hailing from the village of Doi Pangkhon. This lightly sweet coffee features striking tasting notes of blueberry, jasmine, and black tea. The company also links social impact to its product range; for instance, the sale of the Tanzanian coffee directly funds school meals in the respective region.
B2B Market and Hospitality Support
For the B2B market, the company offers a specialized service package. The hospitality division supplies specialty coffee, loose-leaf tea, and porcelain to local entrepreneurs. De Zeeuwse Sommelier also serves as a project dealer for Jura Professional, with a team boasting twenty years of experience in maintaining these super-automatic machines. For larger, traditional espresso machines in the hospitality sector, the brand partners with Espresso Service Zeeland. Hospitality clients receive practical training, where the team provides direct assistance in dialing in the correct coffee ratios and flow rate for maximum quality.
Logistics and Customer Satisfaction
Streamlined logistics guarantee the freshness of the product. Orders placed before 4:00 PM leave the premises the same day. Customers can have their coffee beans custom-ground in 250 or 500 gram portions. Precise grinds are available for espresso, moka pot, filter, and cafetière, among others. The kilo-packs for the hospitality sector are airtight and equipped with a valve, allowing fresh gases to escape safely.
This customer-centric and transparent approach leads to high ratings. In March 2026, the company recorded a score of 9.8 out of 10 on WebwinkelKeur. This rating is built from over 1,400 verified reviews. In their feedback, customers particularly praise the fast delivery, careful packaging, and guaranteed daily-fresh roasting.
