About Hotel âme Café

Hotel âme Café, a design-driven coffee destination in Rotterdam

Hotel âme Café is located in the center of Rotterdam, in a neoclassical building from 1867 on the Eendrachtsweg. The café is part of a 14-room boutique hotel and a concept store. The doors opened in the late summer of 2021, launching a carefully curated hospitality formula.
The project was established by ceramicist and hotelier Angel Cheung-Kwok and her partner Manfung Cheung. Their vision blends Japanese and Scandinavian influences with a serene, slow-living approach. Handmade ceramics by the co-founder provide a tactile signature that runs through the café, shop, and hotel.

Concept and Guest Experience

The aesthetic is distinctly “Japandi”, characterized by natural materials, clean lines, and functional simplicity. The café, the shop, and the hotel together present a single lifestyle proposition. The ceramics available for purchase in the shop are also used to serve drinks and dishes, allowing form and function to merge within the daily ritual.
The ground floor serves as a concept store and showroom for locally crafted objects, including the work of Angel. This emphasizes the connection with Rotterdam makers and positions the space as a creative hub. Here, guests experience a continuous dialogue between product, presentation, and place.

Coffee Program and Brewing Methods

Hotel âme Café partners with Shokunin, a specialty roaster from Rotterdam known for direct-trade projects and flavor-driven storytelling. Shokunin serves as the house roaster, ensuring that origin and the relationship with producers remain central to the offering.
The bar features a professional espresso setup with a La Marzocco machine. Manual filter options are also available, including pour-over using the V60. This ensures that both espresso enthusiasts and fans of clean filter profiles find their preferred brewing method.
  • House roaster: Shokunin, focus on direct-trade and origin stories
  • Espresso: La Marzocco, consistent extraction and texture
  • Filter: manual pour-over with V60 and other options
  • Presentation: served on handmade ceramics by the co-founder

Local Integration and Community

The hotel publishes a “Way of life” local guide, highlighting nearby independent restaurants, galleries, and makers. The focus lies on the creative neighborhood around Eendrachtsplein and Witte de Withstraat. This selection serves as an editorial guide for guests and neighborhood visitors.
A fixed public program, such as weekly cuppings or ongoing workshops, is not prominently visible on the main channels. However, occasional collaborations and creative partnerships can be found in editorial reports and profile articles. This suggests a selective, quality-driven programming approach.

Sustainability and Sourcing

The choice of Shokunin aligns with a roaster-led direct-trade approach, where sustainable relationships with producers and investments in projects at the source are central. In this way, sourcing is substantively anchored in long-term partnerships and transparent supply chains.
The hotel emphasizes “craftsmanship and sustainability” in its operations and uses “sustainable non chemical cleaning agents” for cleaning rooms. The concept store works with locally made, artisanal products, reinforcing the preference for small-scale suppliers and encouraging slower, more conscious consumption.

Recognition and reputation

Hotel âme has been featured by leading travel and design media, including Condé Nast Traveller and the hotels, stays selection of the MICHELIN Guide. This underscores the design quality and the refined hospitality.
Additionally, the project has been featured in specialty coffee and lifestyle publications, such as The Coffee Vine and regional press. The founders and the hotel have been profiled in interviews and trade publications, including an interview with co-founder Angel Kwok for the Independent Hotel Show.
  • Featured in international travel and design titles
  • Coverage in specialty coffee media such as The Coffee Vine
  • Profiles and interviews with the founders in industry channels

Relevance for coffee professionals

For cafés, barista’s and roasters, Hotel âme Café demonstrates how a consistent material narrative enhances the coffee experience. Handmade ceramics, precise brewing methods, and roaster choices converge into one recognizable identity. The guest doesn’t just taste the coffee, but also experiences the design and tactility.
Furthermore, the model illustrates how a café can function as a retail and creative platform. By showcasing local makers, curating its own guide, and carefully documenting collaborations, a network is created that adds both commercial and cultural value.
Finally, the link to direct-trade provides a framework for sustainable sourcing. It connects quality selection with responsible relationships at the origin. Combined with operational choices regarding cleaning and product selection, this shows how sustainability can be made concrete and visible in daily practice.
