More About Dolce Alchemia Coffee Roasters

An Artisanal Journey in Amsterdam-Noord

Dolce Alchemia is a micro-roastery located in Amsterdam-Noord. The company’s legal name is The Coffee Alchemist. American founder Josh Helmuth officially started the business in 2012, following a ten-year career with other coffee companies. His personal journey into the world of coffee actually began back in 1999. However, the Dutch blog Mister Barish cites 2014 as the year of founding. Despite this slight discrepancy, the brand is recognized as a long-standing artisanal project. Helmuth is the only publicly known founder; no broader leadership team or separate green coffee buyer is mentioned.

Wood-Fired with Modern Precision

The most significant differentiator is the wood-fired roasting process. Dolce Alchemia uses an antique Italian coffee roaster from the early seventies. The fuel consists of compressed sawdust briquettes, which are completely free of paint, glue, or plastic. This aligns perfectly with the company’s circular vision. Their philosophy combines old-school wood-firing with modern precision. The result is a coffee with deep sweetness, a full body, and a smooth finish. The company emphasizes the importance of small batches, guaranteeing maximum freshness and consistent quality. Notably, they share detailed data: the drop temperature for the Brazilian bean is exactly 266 degrees Celsius, and for the light Java coffees, they target the first crack with extreme precision.

From Classic Blends to Experimental Java

The current webshop offering consists of fifteen products, including three house blends and various single-origin coffees. The ‘New School Blend’ is a modern espresso, combining washed and unwashed Indonesian and Colombian beans. Its flavor profile features dark chocolate, bright fruit, and a fine balance. The ‘Italian Style Espresso’ is roasted darker; this mix contains beans from Brazil, Colombia, and Ethiopia, along with ten percent gourmet Robusta. This provides notes of almond, walnut, cocoa, and dark chocolate. The ‘Goldilocks Blend’ hits the sweet spot, consisting of half dark roast and half medium-light roast. Mister Barish also praises Helmuth for his ‘Single Estate Blend’ concept.

Transparency and Bean Origin

The roastery partners with small, independent farmers who employ sustainable practices. The assortment includes beans from many countries; customers will find coffee from Burundi, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala Huehuetenango, Ethiopia Sidama, and Costa Rica. Particularly striking are the experimental Java coffees, available in Black Honey Anaerobic, Natural, and Extended Natural variants. The Black Honey Anaerobic hails from West-Java, grown at altitudes between 1400 and 1700 meters. The Brazilian coffee comes from Minas Gerais. However, formal transparency reports or the names of import partners are currently missing from official channels.

Sustainability and Local Impact

Dolce Alchemia takes eco-friendly steps throughout the production process. Consumer packaging consists of recyclable and biodegradable materials. Each bag is printed by hand, meaning the appearance varies, which emphasizes the small-scale character of the brand. For business deliveries, the company uses reusable drums whenever possible. Their waste policy is locally focused; the roastery donates the silver skin (chaff) from the roasted beans to local community gardens. Previous publications even mentioned a broader zero-waste policy, focusing on composting by-products and reusing coffee grounds.

More Than Just Beans for Professionals

The roastery serves a diverse mix of business clients, supplying hospitality venues, offices, and even tattoo shops. The business offering is designed to be very comprehensive:

One-time orders or ongoing subscriptions.
Personalized blends for larger volumes.
Contract roasting and private labeling of specific beans.
Practical training and workshops for baristas.
Advice on machinery, installation support, and ongoing maintenance.

Consumers can easily order coffee online. Packaging is available in 250, 500, and 1000 grams. Customers can choose from six grind settings, including espresso and filter. The physical location is on the Zamenhofstraat. Please note: the general terms and conditions mention number 106c, while the privacy policy mentions number 150. Visitors are welcome Monday through Friday between 09:00 and 14:00. On Saturdays, they are open from 11:00 to 14:00.

A Unique Position in the Dutch Market

Dolce Alchemia fills a unique niche in the Dutch specialty coffee market. They bridge the gap between traditional Italian espresso and experimental processing methods. On Instagram, they claim to be the only wood-fired roaster in Amsterdam. This appears to be their own positioning rather than an independently verified fact. Nevertheless, there is broad recognition. They were already featured at the Amsterdam Coffee Festival in 2014, and Entree Magazine included them in a national overview in 2018. A notable collaboration is with the sailing ship Tres Hombres; Dolce Alchemia roasts the Arabica beans that this ship transports to Amsterdam with zero emissions. Although formal certifications or competition entries are not public, the brand has a strong local presence. They win people over with their artisanal story, the unique wood-fired process, and great flexibility in service.
