About BLUEY’S Café & Deli

BLUEY’S Café & Deli on Zeeburgereiland

BLUEY’S Café & Deli is located at Eef Kamerbeekstraat 180–182 in the Sportheldenbuurt on Zeeburgereiland. The business started as a family venture by cousins Loeki Kin and Timo Theeuwes. The first location opened in July 2020 and serves as the original site in Amsterdam-Oost. A second location was later added in the WTC in Amsterdam-Zuid.

Origins and Development

Loeki Kin attended the Hotel School and previously worked in cafés in Sydney and Byron Bay. He also obtained a barista certificate from the Specialty Coffee Association. Timo Theeuwes works as a chef and menu developer. Within the business, he focuses on dishes featuring local products and recognizable, natural flavors.

The concept is inspired by Australian café culture and revolves around all-day brunch. Coffee, meals, and community activities come together under one roof. The business describes the location as an accessible meeting place for various groups from the neighbourhood.

In 2022, the café was hit by a fire. The venue remained closed for approximately a year and a half. During that period, neighbours helped through crowdfunding and volunteer work. In 2024, the location reopened, this time with an adjoining delicatessen shop. Upon that reopening, Justin, the partner of Loeki Kin, joined the group of owners.

Coffee and brewing methods

The coffee is roasted by Stooker Specialty Coffee from Amsterdam. As their house coffee, BLUEY’S uses the Motto blend. In addition, the selection of single-origin coffees changes with the seasons. These beans come from one specific origin and can vary from period to period.

The April 2026 menu lists multiple brewing methods. Visitors can choose from espresso, hand-poured filter coffee, batch brew, and cold brew. There is also freshly ground decaffeinated coffee. The range of espresso-based drinks includes, among others, long black, cappuccino, latte, flat white, cortado, espresso macchiato, and mocha.

The menu also features a cold coffee drink with a double espresso, coconut milk, agave, and ice. Cascara is prepared as an infusion from the dried fruit surrounding the coffee bean. This means the menu includes, alongside familiar preparations, products that use other parts of the coffee plant.

Origin and Sustainability

According to the menu, the business sources organic and local products wherever possible. Mentioned suppliers include Bakkerij MAMA, MOMA, Slagerij de Wit, By Trinitea, Chef Centraal, and Groenteboer Borneo. The exact origin therefore varies by product category.

MOMA supplies milk from local organic farmers. Bakkerij MAMA makes sourdough bread from entirely Dutch grains. Slagerij de Wit works according to a nose-to-tail approach, using various parts of the animal. Syrups from Roze Bunker are also on the menu. This producer works with local ingredients and describes its approach as circular.

The menu states that the coffee from Stooker is ethically sourced. The roaster works with traceable lots, fixed purchasing partners, and a policy on fair prices. Stooker also holds a B Corp certification. For catering, BLUEY’S uses, among other things, recyclable cardboard bowls and recyclable PET bottles. The company also states that it plants a tree for every Google review via Kuwi.org.

Community role and activities

The community function takes shape through permanent facilities and occasional activities. For the Clean Island initiative, waste grabbers and garbage bags are available for people collecting litter. There is also a swap spot for plant cuttings, a book swap, a public bike pump, a children’s corner, and a herb garden.

In the past, workshops were held on barista skills, ceramic painting, knitting, and natural wine. The reopening in June 2024 was accompanied by children’s activities and live music. In May 2025, the first year of the delicatessen shop was marked with a separate event.

BLUEY’S also has two rooms for private gatherings. The Glass House is used for meetings, workshops, and celebrations. The Tasting Room is set up for lunches, dinners, tastings, and informal business meetings. Formal awards or competition wins for the Amsterdam-Oost location are not publicly documented.
