About Wadapartja Westerhaven
Wadapartja Westerhaven: a hospitality concept in Binnenstad-West
Wadapartja Westerhaven is located at Pottebakkersrijge 21 in Groningen. According to public neighborhood data, the street is situated in Binnenstad-West. The venue is considered the second Groningen location of Wadapartja and opened in the summer of 2019. An exact opening date is not publicly documented.
History and Ownership
Margreet Metting founded Wadapartja and opened the first branch at Gedempte Zuiderdiep in the spring of 2015. Gezinus Winters joined as a co-owner in 2017. Metting came from Winschoten and Winters from Zevenhuizen. Little public information is available about their previous careers.
The original concept combined hospitality with the sale of interior items. Visitors could purchase furniture, lamps, plants, and tableware, among other things. At the start, there was also a focus on providing space for artists, producers, and small businesses. In this way, Wadapartja functioned not only as a dining establishment but also as a shop and a meeting place.
In October 2024, Ben de Boed and Michelle de Boed-Niewzwaag took over the business. According to available reporting, Ben was responsible for administrative and organizational tasks. Michelle took charge of daily operations. The name and the general hospitality concept remained in use after the transfer.
Coffee and Brewing
The coffee beans come from Koffiestation, a micro-roastery from Groningen. The 2026 drink menu features various preparations based on espresso. The offering includes single and double espresso, espresso macchiato, cortado, flat white, cappuccino, regular coffee, latte macchiato, and iced latte. An extra shot of espresso and oat milk can be ordered separately.
The menu also lists several cold and flavored drinks. Examples include iced caramel latte, white chocolate iced cappuccino, and iced raspberry chai. According to the menu text, Wadapartja makes the chai syrup used in-house. Information about the countries of origin, coffee farms, varieties, processing, and roast profiles of the beans is not publicly disclosed.
A 2019 menu offered filter coffee until midday. At that time, breakfast with so-called specialty drip coffee from Koffiestation was also on the menu. On the current 2026 drink menu, drip coffee and other manual filter methods are no longer listed. The documented coffee offering therefore focuses primarily on espresso and milk-based drinks.
Daytime café, families, and events
Westerhaven is set up as a daytime café for breakfast, brunch, lunch, coffee, pastries, and other drinks. The location has a play corner for families and a terrace near the Museumbrug. Both Wadapartja branches can be used outside regular opening hours for private group gatherings.
The public event archive lists, among others, an Easter breakfast and brunch on April 19, 2025, and a King’s Day activity on April 27, 2024. Older information mentions regular workshops and activities. A complete current overview of these is not available. Family activities have also been documented via social media, including face painting for children.
The branch has been recognized as a training company for hospitality education since December 24, 2019. No publicly documented coffee tastings, coffee exhibitions, or own barista competitions have been found. No specific coffee prices or mentions in national coffee rankings have been recorded either.
Local Sourcing and Sustainability
Wadapartja highlights local sourcing as its core principle. Alongside Koffiestation, partners include Stadsbakker Luuk, De Eemstuin, Boer & Chef, and fish supplier ’t Ailand. Other mentioned suppliers are Slagerij Boersma and the Groningen breweries Baxbier, Martinus, and Eggens.
The menu features local eggs, organic cheese, bread from Bakker Luuk, salad from De Eemstuin, Groningen grass-fed beef, and bacon from Porc Locale. Groningen grain is processed through Jan de Molenaar and Stadsbakker Luuk. According to supplier information, beer bostel from brewery Martinus is used in wholemeal bread.
The organization states that it primarily uses LED lighting, several organic products, a zero-waste policy, and second-hand goods. These statements apply to Wadapartja as a whole and have not been individually verified for the Westerhaven location. The branch also received the Groen Genieten certification. This label relates to measures concerning the building, facilities, and the use of more sustainable ingredients.
Recognition and Positioning
Wadapartja Westerhaven is listed in the location overviews of Visit Groningen and Visit Wadden. Nederlandse Spoorwegen included the venue in January 2026 as a lunch spot in an editorial route along the water in Groningen. Both locations also carry the LEKKER VEGA Silver certification. According to the published criteria, at least 75 percent of the dishes are vegetarian and at least 30 percent are plant-based.
