About Wakuli specialty coffee bar (Theresiastraat)

Wakuli on Theresiastraat: background and positioning

Wakuli opened a coffee bar at Theresiastraat 108 in the Bezuidenhout neighborhood of The Hague in late July 2025. The location is situated in the Haagse Hout district. At the time of opening, this location was considered the second Wakuli bar in The Hague and, according to co-founder Yorick Bruins, the company’s seventeenth store.

Wakuli was founded by Yorick Bruins and Lukas Grosfeld. They met during their studies in London. Bruins studied Food Policy and later worked in East Africa, including with coffee-producing communities. Grosfeld studied Philosophy and Economics and gained experience at start-ups. The company began in 2019 as a consumer brand with an online subscription model.

Concept and offerings at the bar

The bar combines dine-in service with takeaway sales. In addition, the location sells coffee beans and coffee pads. According to Wakuli, staff members are happy to discuss the origin and flavor profiles of the coffee upon request. This fits within the broader business model, in which the company roasts its own coffee and aims to work with fewer commercial intermediaries. These are policy statements made by the company itself.

For espresso, the bar uses the Original House Blend. Filter coffee is prepared with the rotating Discover Monthly coffee. The permanent menu also features americano, cortado, cappuccino, flat white, and latte. The documented preparation methods are espresso, filter coffee, and nitro cold brew. The public menu does not mention any specific manual filter method, such as V60, AeroPress, or Chemex.

The cold drinks include, among others, Nitro Cold Brew, Nitro Oat Latte, Cinnamon Oat Nitro, and Grapefruit Spritz. On the research date, the menu also listed seasonal drinks, including Peach Nitro, Peanut Butter Nitro, Chocolate Raspberry, Banana Split, and Pandan Spekkoek. This part of the offering may change.

In addition to coffee, the menu lists chai, matcha latte, and hot chocolate. Banana Bread Matcha and Raspberry Pandan Matcha were also on the menu. According to the menu, drinks can also be prepared with ice. Furthermore, decaffeinated coffee and several dairy alternatives are available.

Roasting, origin, and sourcing

Wakuli roasts the coffee itself in Watergang, north of Amsterdam. According to the company, the operational headquarters and the roastery are also located there. No program with guest roasters has been documented for the Theresiastraat location.

The Original House Blend contains coffee from partners in Brazil, Rwanda, and Ethiopia. A described relationship runs through Baho Coffee and the Kinazi washing station in Rwanda. Wakuli states that washed coffee from Kinazi is used in the blend. The company also says it collaborates on practices at the washing station, soil and tree health, and the financing of new coffee plants.

Another relationship involves the Indonesian exporter Ontosoroh and producer groups on Flores. Farmers in Rende Nao and the cooperative group Asnikom are mentioned. According to Wakuli, this collaboration began in 2019 and focuses, among other things, on sorting, lot selection, and drying methods.

Sustainability as a business policy

Wakuli states that it works with long-term relationships with producer groups, cooperatives, and exporters. On the partner page, thirteen sourcing partners were listed on the research date. The company cites direct relationships, quality improvement with producers, prices above commodity market levels, and agricultural practices for soil, biodiversity, and climate resilience as priorities.

The company aims to have all coffee produced under its own regenerative framework by 2028. However, the available information does not describe any specific measures for the building or the daily operations at Theresiastraat. Data on energy use, waste processing, or local food suppliers is not publicly documented.

Neighborhood contact and public attention

Upon opening, Wakuli organized a day on which coffee was served for free. The company presented this as an introduction to local residents. Bruins later wrote about contact with residents, neighboring businesses, and local subscribers. Recurring neighborhood projects or exhibitions at this location have not been publicly recorded.

Wakuli offers tasting workshops in bars in Amsterdam, The Hague, and Leiden. The described session lasts one and a half hours, is in English, and has space for a maximum of eight participants. Topics include cultivation, sourcing, roasting, and cupping. Public information does not clarify whether The Hague workshops specifically take place at Theresiastraat.

The local business organization BIZ De Theresiastraat announced the arrival of the bar and later confirmed the opening. Koffiework included the location in a guide for specialty coffee and remote work in December 2025. Location-specific competition awards or independently assessed coffee awards have not been documented.
