More about Segbroek

Segbroek: coffee culture as a community function

Segbroek doesn’t have a coffee story of large roasteries on canals or famous hospitality streets. Coffee culture grew more slowly here, emerging from residential streets, shops, sandwich shops, and cafés that primarily serve the neighborhood. This makes the district interesting for entrepreneurs and coffee lovers: coffee is less of a stage and more of a daily habit.

The foundation for this lies in the layout of the district. Regentessekwartier was largely established between 1885 and 1910, the Bomen- and Bloemenbuurt between 1911 and 1923, and Valkenbos after 1906. Since 1988, Den Haag has used the current district structure. As a result, Segbroek did not develop around one historical center, but around several residential neighborhoods with their own shopping streets.

From Teetotaler Coffee Houses to High Street Cafés

An early trace can be found at Fahrenheitstraat 2. The building once bore the inscription “Christelijk Geheel Onthouders Koffiehuis“ (Christian Total Abstinence Coffee House). These establishments offered a social and moral alternative to the pub, where weekly wages were often spent. In this way, coffee early on played a role as a safe meeting place.

Later, coffee became primarily a part of everyday street life. The Weimarstraat is considered a key artery in this regard. Archive records show a coffee house at Weimarstraat 245 in 1997. Today, Kali Tengah is located at Weimarstraat 54, one of the most relevant coffee businesses in Segbroek.

Furthermore, Kali Tengah connects the neighborhood with older Dutch coffee stories. The name refers to a family connection to a plantation in East Java, where coffee, among other things, was grown. Since 2012, the shop has been selling coffee beans and tea on the Weimarstraat, featuring beans from Haagse roasters such as BOON and Giraffe Coffee.

The current players: small, local, and scattered

As of May 5, 2026, Segbroek does not have a dense specialty coffee zone like some central districts. The scene is hybrid. There is one clear specialty chain location, alongside strong bakery cafés, lunch spots, community rooms, and a serious coffee and tea shop.

Wakuli Specialty Coffee Bar at Fahrenheitstraat 496 is the most distinct specialty address. The brand chose Fahrenheitstraat for its first location in Den Haag, announced in June 2024. Wakuli positions itself with fresh, light-roasted specialty coffee and a direct farmer-to-consumer model.

Fleur’s Koffie at Van Bylandtstraat 92 takes a different approach. The shop calls itself the “living room of the Regentessekwartier” and serves coffee from Roast Factory from Den Haag. This fits a neighborhood where quality is important, but where the atmosphere remains accessible and low-threshold.

Birdflower at Professor Kaiserstraat 55 and Charlie’s Fika at Goudsbloemlaan 142 also demonstrate the demand for coffee within broader day-time concepts. Since 2022, Birdflower has combined bakery, patisserie, lunch, and coffee. Charlie’s Fika brings a Swedish bageri-kafé concept, offering coffee and something sweet as a social break.

What local tastes reveal about demand and opportunity

On January 1, 2026, Segbroek had 62,828 inhabitants and is expected to grow only slightly toward 2035. Therefore, the demand for coffee primarily comes from a large, mixed residential area. Young professionals, families, and older residents each use hospitality venues in their own way.

In the Bomen- and Bloemenbuurt, family rhythms and shopping streets drive the demand. Fahrenheitstraat, Thomsonlaan, and Thomsonplein support cafés where coffee goes hand-in-hand with breakfast, lunch, cake, terraces, and daily groceries. A pure coffee lab fits less naturally here than a warm neighborhood spot.

In Regentesse and Valkenbos, there seems to be room for “local but high-quality”. Fleur’s demonstrates this with Haagse beans and a living-room model. At the same time, Wakuli and Kali Tengah prove that a selective specialty niche exists, with attention to beans, roast dates, and home brewing.

The closure of SunSun Coffee at Goudenregenplein 5 nuances this picture. The establishment offered espresso, batch brew, and filter coffee, but has permanently closed. Segbroek can support great coffee, but the market is not yet deep enough for a compact specialty cluster.

Community, events and sustainability

In Segbroek, coffee primarily acts as a social glue for the neighborhood. Café Emma at Regentesseplein 222 is a classic example: coffee, newspapers, dinner and drinks all blend seamlessly together. Kali Tengah adds an educational layer to this, offering tastings, barista workshops and other small-scale activities.

District events primarily drive foot traffic toward the coffee streets. The Segbroek Festival is scheduled for June 19 and 20, 2026, on Thomsonlaan and Fahrenheitstraat, featuring a market, children’s activities and food trucks. The Weimarkt on Weimarstraat, mentioned for June 21, 2025, confirms this same community function.

Sustainability remains practical and fragmented. There is no confirmed Segbroek collective for reusable cups, coffee ground composting or bicycle delivery. Yet, the building blocks are clearly there: Wakuli with direct farmer relationships, Fleur’s with local suppliers, Kali Tengah with a home-brewing culture and local roasters, and bakery cafes that rely on craftsmanship and local consumption.

For entrepreneurs, that is the core of Segbroek. Successful coffee concepts align with the rhythm of the neighborhood: local, accessible, well-made and socially useful. Specialty coffee certainly has a place here, but it thrives most when it is not detached from the community.
