About Vandeeg Vandaag
From micro-bakery to Dudok kiosk
Vandeeg Vandaag was founded in 2021 as a micro-bakery in the basement of Boekhandel Riemer in Groningen. The bakery then produced rolls, banana bread, and brownies for the coffee bars of Koffiestation. In late 2022, the project was renamed Vandeeg Vandaag. This name change coincided with the preparation of a bakery and kiosk at the former Dudok gas station on the Diep.
Public sources do not mention a separate founding team for Vandeeg Vandaag. The initiative originated from Koffiestation. This roastery was established in 2012 by Emiel Driesten and Douwe. Gert Jan and Harmen Riemer joined the group of owners in 2020. Emiel Driesten and Harmen Riemer later submitted the plan for the redevelopment of the Dudok building. Their proposal won the municipal selection.
The kiosk began a trial run on March 7, 2025. The official opening of Dudok aan het Diep followed on May 16, 2025. Vandeeg Vandaag combines sourdough bread, pastries, filled focaccia, and drinks there. According to the company, the offering changes by time of day and season. Flavors and fillings are also regularly adjusted.
There is some ambiguity regarding the visit address. The official contact page lists the kiosk at Turfsingel 16 and the bakery at Turfsingel 4. Other public mentions use Turfsingel 4 as the location for the business.
Coffee and other offerings
The coffee at the kiosk comes from Koffiestation, a micro-roastery from Groningen. Which origin, plantation, or blend is currently being served is not publicly documented. The brewing methods used are also not described. The website mentions no espresso machine, batch filter, or manual filter methods.
A report from June 2025 does mention a cappuccino with coffee from Koffiestation. The same report describes homemade lemonade with fruit and herbs. In broader communication about the concept, ice cream and light alcoholic drinks are also mentioned.
The bakery offering includes, among other things, cinnamon and cardamom rolls, varying special rolls, brownies, carrot cake, and banana bread. In addition, the bakery makes seasonal focaccia and various types of sourdough bread. Specific prices, portions, and a fixed daily menu are not included in the available information.
Origin of grain and bread preparation
When it comes to bread, Vandeeg Vandaag emphasizes origin and season. The company states that it uses ingredients whose origin is recognizable and which, where possible, come from the region. For the bread, the bakery uses locally and organically grown grain and locally milled flour.
According to company information, the wheat comes from Landgoud in Kloosterburen. Molen Joeswert in Feerwerd mills this grain on stone. Rye and spelt come from Graanbroeders in Harich, Friesland. This supplier works, according to Vandeeg Vandaag, with regenerative farming methods and mills its own grain.
The breads are made with a sourdough culture, without added yeast. According to the website, the fermentation lasts at least 24 hours. During the final construction phase of the Dudok project, preparations for solar panels were reported. This concerned the infrastructure of the building and not a separate sustainability policy of the bakery.
Public space and activities
The location is part of a redeveloped public area by the water. The terrace deck, the play area, and the water tap point are accessible without a purchase at the kiosk. This brings together commercial hospitality and public space in the same place.
The opening in May 2025 included live music, dancing, and food and drinks from the kiosk. In May 2026, a book presentation also took place there. The authors of From City to Wadden Sea there, the first copy was handed over to the King’s Commissioner, René Paas. Around Mother’s Day 2026, the company also announced a tasting event featuring pastries.
Vandeeg Vandaag participates in Lutje Lokaal, a Groningen network for local shopping days, city guides, and themed routes. Regular exhibitions are not publicly documented.
Media attention and architecture
The development received attention from regional media and platforms focused on the city and architecture. The redevelopment of Dudok aan het Diep won four out of five awards in the 2025 Groningen Architecture Prize, including the online public vote. This recognition was for the entire construction and public space project, not solely for Vandeeg Vandaag as a hospitality business.
